“What do you want from me, Tristan?” I seethed.

“I’ve been trying to call you for months now, and you haven’t answered,” my ex-boyfriend replied.

I rolled my eyes. “Maybe you should have taken that as an indication that I don’t want to speak to you.”

“Please, I just want a few minutes of your time,” he begged.

“And I wanted that a long time ago,” I fired back. “Now, don’t ever call me here again.”

Without giving him the opportunity to respond, I slammed the phone down and stared out the window as my chest heaved with fury.

This guy just wouldn’t quit.

It was done. We were over.

He needed to leave me alone.

I hadn’t quite gotten myself completely under control when I started moving around the shop and handling my end-of-day duties. I’d hoped to go home and relax, but I was all fired up now. And as I did what I needed to do so I could leave for the day, Tristan’s audacity just made me angrier and angrier.

It shouldn’t have, because I learned a long time ago about the kind of man he was. Tristan didn’t give a crap about me; he only cared about himself.

As soon as that thought flitted through my brain, I stopped completely in my tracks.

I’d spent time on the hiking trail today silently questioning Wyatt and his motives. While he stood to gain something from choosing to deceive me, he hadn’t done anything to warrant my lack of confidence in him.

It all came from Tristan and the way he’d treated me.

I’d judged Wyatt so poorly. Sure, like Tristan, he might have come from money, but when it came to basic human decency and kindness, Wyatt was light years ahead of Tristan.

Wyatt was a good guy, a genuinely good guy.

He didn’t deserve what I’d been handing him. Or, at the very least, he didn’t deserve to have me constantly questioning his motives when he hadn’t given me any reason to feel that way.

He didn’t need to pay for Tristan’s mistakes.

Not thinking twice about it, I moved across the shop and around the counter to grab my cell phone. I pulled up Wyatt’s contact on my screen and tapped on his name.

Two rings later, he answered, “Hello?”

“Hi, Wyatt. It’s Rhea.”

“Hey. I wasn’t expecting to hear from you tonight. Did you happen to check your schedule?”

“I did.”

He was silent a moment. When I didn’t offer any additional information, he pressed, “And?”

“And I’m wide open on Saturday, so I’d love to join you at your sister’s party,” I told him.

I could hear the smile in his voice when he replied, “Really? We’re going to have so much fun.”

I didn’t know how it was possible, but I believed every single word he said. “Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. I just… well, what’s the dress code?”

“There isn’t necessarily a dress code, but you wouldn’t be overdressed if you showed up in something like you wore out with me last weekend or even on your own birthday,” he revealed.

At least I could get myself all dolled up to meet his family. “Great. So, you’ll pick me up at five o’clock?”

“I will.”
