“Want to get together tonight?” She asks.

“Can’t,” I tell her honestly. “Family dinner to welcome Samantha home.”

“What about after?”

I think about it for a few minutes. She’s one of Samantha’s best friends. I don’t want to give her the wrong idea. There’s nothing there between us. At least for me. She’s been a way to scratch an itch, but nothing more.

I watch Samantha as she hugs Brianna and thanks her for a wonderful time. She doesn’t even look at Autumn or offer a goodbye before she heads into the house with her dad, Matt, and Oli following.

“What was all that?” I ask.

“Nothing.” Autumn huffs. “She’s mad at me over some guy.”

What guy? I want to ask but don’t. Something akin to jealousy snakes through my veins. Fuck. Again, what is happening to me? I need to forget about Samantha being anything but a sister figure to me, and I know just how to do it.

“Meet me out by the barn around ten,” I ordered.

Autumn licks her lips and smiles. “See you then, lover.”

“Autumn, let’s go,” Brianna calls as she gets back into her car.

Autumn rolls her eyes but does as she’s told. Brianna offers me a strained smile when she turns around on the drive. As they roll down the long gravel road, I make my way inside.

Later that night, I met Autumn out by the back of the barn. While Wayne says nothing about us having the occasional woman over, I don’t take Autumn inside. Matt and Oli don’t like her. I’m not sure why, but I respect my brothers.

Instead, I fuck Autumn up against the outside wall. When she tries to kiss me, I move my face away and then turn her around. I was hoping that being here with Autumn would take away my memories of Samantha this afternoon.

It doesn’t work. All I can see when I close my eyes is her legs, her hair, and that tantalizing stretch of skin between her top and shorts. I want to know what the tattoo is, to trace it with my tongue.

More than all that, I want to know what guy she met this summer. What’s so important about him to cause a rift between her and Autumn? They’ve been friends for a long time.

I look down at the hips my fingers are squeezing. Then I look forward and see red hair instead of blonde and my movements stutter. I can’t do this. I can feel my dick deflating.

I reach around Autumn and rub at her clit until she comes. When she’s finished shaking from the orgasm, I pull out of her, tying off the empty condom and putting it in my pocket.

It’s a good thing my cock lost interest so I can fake the orgasm Autumn expected me to have right along with her. I tuck myself away and help her right her clothes.

She looks up at me from under her lashes, a coy smile on her face. “That was amazing.” She reaches for me, but I take a step back.

“It’s late. You should probably go.” I remark.

“Seriously? What’s wrong, baby?”

I stiffen at the word baby. “Don’t,” I told her. “I’m not your baby, Autumn. You know the score.”

At first, Autumn looks hurt. Then she straightens her shoulders. “Of course.” She scoffs. She gives me her back.

As she walks away, I think maybe I should feel bad about how I just treated her. The thing is, I can’t find it in me to care.

Chapter Five

Samantha

It was exhilarating taking Dakota riding. It had been so long since I could just relax and enjoy the serenity of the ranch. I can’t believe how much I missed it.

The light braying of the animals, the wind whipping across my face, and even the familiar smell of manure calmed me. Dakota’s laugh as we trotted along was music to my ears. Having a picnic in the meadow brought back long-forgotten memories.

While Dakota naps, I decide to drive into town, curious to see if anything has changed in the last six years. I also need to stop by the funeral home. Rush Springs is a small town with only around nine hundred residents. The main strip looks like something stuck in the past.
