I take a step back, letting Samantha sag against the wall while I try my best to calm my racing heart. I take a few deep breaths and pace.

“I tried to shut it all out. To take my mind to a happier time. I tried so hard to find a space in myself that felt safe. It didn’t work. Every time I closed my eyes, I could see those men leering down at me. I can still feel their hands on my skin and taste their breath on my face.” Samantha says.

I open my mouth to respond, but Samantha holds up a hand. “Every damn time I tried to find that happy place, it was your face, I saw. But even those memories were tainted by that day in the barn. There was nowhere to run. Nowhere to hide from the torment that I faced daily. But you know what? I’d do it all over again for Dakota. I’d do anything to make sure she was safe.”

“Why didn’t you leave?”

She laughs. It’s a hollow sound. “And go where, Shane? There was not one place I could go that Nick couldn’t and wouldn’t find me.”

“You could have come to me!” I yell.

“And bring the danger to the rest of my family? That wasn’t a choice I was willing to make.”

I huff and walk toward her again. This time she stands her ground. I’m almost a foot taller than she is, but she looks up at me like she’s ready to go ten rounds in the ring with me.

“We’d have handled it together.” I sigh.

“I’m sure Autumn would have loved that.” She retorts.

I shake my head at her. She has no clue about me and Autumn. None. The only reason I kept fucking Autumn was because she was gone. I could never replace her. It wasn’t even a possibility.

I grab her around the waist and lift her onto the counter. She yelps out in surprise. “What do you think you’re doing?” She asks.

“Proving a point,” I say before I press my lips to hers.

She doesn’t respond to the kiss, so I press even harder until she finally gives in. I run my tongue along her bottom lip, coaxing her to open for me. She does and I waste no time pushing my tongue into her waiting mouth with a groan. I’ve kissed her a couple of times since she’s been back, but this one is different.

I feel the need to brand myself on her and erase any memory she has of another man. Especially the memories of those who took something from her she didn’t freely give them.

Samantha tastes of chocolate and mint. My mind takes me back to times when she used to ask for mint mochas. She was the only one who liked them. I run my hands up her bare legs until I reach her thighs. I squeeze the silky flesh with my hands until I have her moaning.

The sound goes straight to my dick and I grind into her. She rolls her hips against me. Our tongues battle until I feel her teeth bite down. I jerk back when I taste copper in my mouth. My little sunshine is a minx.

I grab hold of her legs and lift until she’s wrapped around me. I turn and carry her. “Where are we going?” She asks.

“To give you a new and improved happy place,” I tell her, looking at her softly.

“But I’m baking.” She responds while looking behind her at the oven.

“Don’t care,” I say, nipping at her neck.

“The cupcakes will burn.” She protests.

“Samantha, right now, the entire damn world could go up in flames for all I care.”

Samantha giggles. “Seriously, Shane. We shouldn’t do this.”

“Sunshine shut the hell up and let me be where I belong,” I say.

“Where’s that?”

“Between your thighs,” I tell her with all seriousness.

That’s where I’ve always belonged. Between her thighs and in her heart. While she may let me between her legs today, it’s a long road to get back into her heart.
