I actually wanted to scream and cry and whine about how unfair this all was, but my beast roared within, a snap of her fangs on my conscious mind telling me to smarten up.

This is the way forward. A deeply instinctual calm fell over me. This was the way it would be done.

I straightened my spine and set my shoulders. Nothing had changed and yet everything had changed. My beast wanted this. I wanted this. I craved stability, and biting my uncle, taking his pack, had given me peace with her.

I jutted my chin then looked each of the men in the eye, one at a time.

“I won’t pit you against one another.” I kept my voice steady somehow. “I won’t even consider doing this unless you’re all on board with each other’s decision. The question is, can you handle it?”

We all turned to face Kane.

He shifted his focus away, choosing to stare at the print instead, like he could make sense of this backward concept by glaring at the ancient picture. He ran his hand along the back of his neck then cleared his throat.

“Alpha Kane.” Vic’s voice cut through the tension.

Kane jerked his head toward the door.

“There’s a call from Toronto. Came on the secure line.” Vic scanned the room, frowned, obviously picked up on the tension in the room. He took a step back the way he came. “But I can get the details and pass a message along.”

“No,” Kane barked. He paused, collected himself with a slight shake of his shoulders, then put the print down gently. “No, I’m coming.”

He left, and my questions hung like a noose.

Chapter Fifteen

Charlie

Kane was flustered, raking his fingers roughly through his hair and pacing in his den. I followed Johnny into Kane’s sanctuary, knowing that the dynamic had altered between us. Suddenly, I was on equal footing, alpha to alpha, but the question still remained, would Kane accept my bite? Did I even want to give him one? For that matter, was I ready to bond with Johnny and Levi in such a permanent way?

Even though this was a complete and total mind-fuck of a twist, it also didn’t feel wrong to me. Maybe Levi had been right all along, and females had been the ones with all the power, once upon a time.

My father always said there would be one queen to unite them all.

A fizz tingled down my spine then raced back up. Maybe…maybe that really is supposed to be me.

“We lost our lead on Andrew,” Kane blurted, his eyes wild.

“What do you mean? I thought you said the men you had on it would get it done.” I bit my tongue after those words slipped out.

Gareth provided us with coordinates and plans. His last contact with Andrew was the day of the attack on me. After that, Andrew went silent—presumably because he failed his mission and knew his life is in danger. Gareth sent some wolves to Toronto to hunt him. They were working for me now, taking my orders. Even still, Kane already had wolves on the ground in Toronto, and he had assured me that Andrew would be found.

Kane didn’t give me one of his hard stares for the question, which was almost worse. To me that meant he knew he fucked up.

“They just called. Andrew vanished.” Kane shook his head. “They were set to apprehend him, closed in on the alley he’s been skulking for nights now. It should have been a done deal.”

“Someone took him out?” Johnny offered, even though he didn’t sound confident.

“His trail was cold. Dead cold.” Kane sighed. “His scent was faint, like he hadn’t been there at all.”

“So, your guys lost him.” I was frustrated. I wanted to do something about Andy myself. I knew Kane wouldn’t approve—and that bothered me, not because I wouldn’t go ahead and do it anyway, but because I wanted his approval. “Where did they track him? What alley was he haunting?” Maybe I could help position him. If he was near one of the few forest spaces in Toronto, I could give them an idea of prime hunkering locations.

“Close to your place. There was a large area of scent trail, but my guys were closing in.” He lifted a shoulder. “West of your apartment, maybe four blocks?”

Fuuuuuck.

“I need to call Ruby.” My heart was in my throat. “Make sure she’s okay.”

“Who the fuck is Ruby?” Kane asked.
