Sam steeled his posture, silently agreeing. Shook his head slowly, mouthing three words to John. What the hell?
John added another syllable to his wordless return. No fucking clue.
At least they were on the same wavelength. A good thing in the middle of a jungle or the outskirts of a village full of hostiles—but standing on a driveway with marble insets, gawking at a villa that made the high roller suites look like the ghetto? He had no damn idea, and it freaked him the fuck out.
Anything can happen…in the woods…
“Not a Sondheim moment, asshole,” he gritted under his breath. Far under.
Another long moment passed. Another.
Sam didn’t let him down. Helped him listen. Watch. Even smell. Damn good thing, because the tendrils of Tracy Rhodes’ scent still teased, blatantly reminding him of the precious cargo under his watch. A duty he seriously struggled to keep objective…

A thread of light—barely discernible, especially in the sun.
The incandescence of a laser trigger.
“Fuck,” he choked.
“Fuck,” Sam gritted.
“Shit,” Shep gasped. “Reverse. Reverse. This shit is genked up. Reverse!”
All the drivers throttled the Escalades back down the drive like hornets bolting a nest. Shep gunned his engine so hard, the front passenger door whumped shut by itself. The sound of it was a lead punch to Franzen’s gut, emphasizing the absence of the man who’d just stood next to it.
The guy who, a second later, crossed that damn blue thread—and was swallowed whole by the explosion he set off because of it.
