“Fuck off, Jonas. I could be hammered, and I’d still be fine to ride.”

“The cops are looking to crucify us at the moment. If they catch you riding under the influence, they’re likely to throw the book at you. Give me your fucking keys,” Jonas says with no small amount of authority in his voice.

Reaching into my pocket, I hold out the keys. “No one rides her but me.”

“And no one will. Go sleep it off.”

As a patched-in member, I have my own room at the clubhouse, but I rarely sleep here. Leaving Jonas, I walk down the hallway and up a set of stairs to my room. Someone has been inside, as fresh sheets are on the bed. Probably one of the club’s angels did it for me. Some of those women are looking for anyone in the MC who is high in the hierarchy so they can become old ladies. They’re wasting their time with me, but it is nice to have my room cleaned.

Stripping out of my clothes and boots, I fall onto the bed. Maybe it is the noise from below or the feeling of belonging I get from the clubhouse, or maybe it is all the whiskey I’ve drunk, but within moments, I’m asleep.

Chapter Four

LORE

For three days, I’ve sat beside Tobias, remembering all the wasted opportunities to spend time with him as a consequence of the decisions I made in my life. Being a mother was never part of the plan. I went to the abortion clinic ready to rid myself of my bump in the road. Tobias’ father had other ideas. He really stepped up as the mother and father of our son.

A nurse walks in and picks up his chart, then reaches into her pocket and holds out a sheet of paper.

“What’s this?”

“It’s a list of hotels in the area. They’re all close to the hospital. The first one is a short eight-minute walk.”

“You kicking me out?”

She smiles and puts Tobias’ chart down. “No, but you need a break.” She nods at Tobias. “He’s strong and stable, and I hope you don’t mind me saying, but you need a shower.”

Lifting an arm over my head, I smell my arm pit and shrug. “I’ve smelled worse.”

“Right.”

Standing, I look down at Tobias. “You’ve got my number?”

“We do.”

“Okay.” I hold up the sheet of paper. “I’m going to find a place to shower.”

“Get some rest. You’re no good to him if you’re running on empty.”

Not wanting to argue with her, I bend and kiss Tobias on the forehead, then leave the ICU. In the waiting room, Dane Reynolds is talking to a man who looks like a younger version of himself. Dane sees me and stops talking.

“Hey, Lore, you look good.”

“Dane.”

He smiles at me, and I’m sure, just like in the old days, most of the women in a ten-foot radius would drop their panties and beg for him to notice them.

Not me.

Never me.

His charms didn’t work on me then, and they don’t work on me now.

I keep walking toward the elevators and hit the button for the ground floor.

“You’re leaving?”

“Yep.”
