Chuckling at their banter, I ask, “Are we cool to go and knock on his door, Frank?”

“Go on through. He’s expecting you.”

I swing open the bullpen gate, and Destiny walks through the station all the way to the back, where Sheriff Morales has his office. She raps on the door twice and then opens it.

“Sheriff Morales, I’m Destiny Bennett, and I’m here with my client, Dane Reynolds.”

Carlos is sitting behind his desk. He raises his eyebrows at me.

I hold my hands out wide. “Hey, you’re the one who said it was official.”

“Shut the door.” He points at Destiny. “Does she really need to be here?”

“Yes, Sheriff Morales, I do.” Destiny sits and crosses her legs, then looks expectantly at him.

“Carlos, if you called me down here over the ATV thing with Izzy, I’ll fix it. I’ll even pay for it. There was no need to drag me in here.”

Carlos leans forward in his chair and gestures for me to sit, then he clasps his hands together on his desk. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Destiny glances at me, then asks, “Well, why are we here, then?”

“No, now I want to talk about Izzy and her ATVs.”

Izzy is Carlos’ girlfriend and runs a business with Cassia, who is engaged to Zeke, one of my men. They hire out ATVs in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter.

“One of the guys wrecked one of her ATVs and maybe gave her a hard time.”

Carlos stands. “What’s his name?”

I shrug. “Don’t know.”

“Dane, if this was Kat, what would you do?”

“To paraphrase a friend, I’d burn the world down. But apart from knowing what happened, I don’t know who it was. I thought you were bringing me down here to bust my balls over it, so if it’s not that, why’d you want to see me, Carlos?”

He stares at Destiny. “Does she need to be here?”

Reaching over, I put my hand on Destiny’s shoulder. “Destiny is one of us, and she’s a lawyer. I trust her.”

He sighs and sits. “Got a call from a friend in the FBI. Seems they are investigating the Abruzzis, and your name came up.”

“In what context?” asks Destiny.

“Their wiretap suggests you’re on a hit list.”

Destiny looks at me, fear in her eyes. “What did you do?”

“Nothing... yet.”

Destiny directs her gaze to Carlos. “Why are you telling him this?”

Carlos smiles. “We’re friends.” Then he locks eyes with me. “And I owe him.”

“You know that’s the first time you’ve called me a friend.”

Carlos ignores my comment. “We have a deal, Dane, no violence in Tourmaline.”

“I can’t help it if someone wants to kill me.”
