“Your lawyer asked a good question. What did you do?”

Standing, I hold out a hand to Destiny and help her to her feet. “Like I told Destiny, nothing yet.”

“Why do they want you dead?” Carlos rephrases his question.

“It’s the way this business goes sometimes,” I reply cryptically.

Carlos rises. “Make sure there’s no bad business in Tourmaline.”

Holding up a hand to stop him from another sermon, I say, “I know, I know. You don’t want any trouble in Tourmaline. It might surprise you to know I don’t want anything bad to happen here either.”

He holds out his hand, and I shake it. “You call me if you need anything. Got it?”

Grinning, I reply, “We take care of ourselves. See you, Carlos.”

I escort Destiny out of the police station, and she lays a hand on my arm. “Is trouble coming?”

Shrugging, I lean against my bike. “We are trying to prevent that from happening.”

“We?”

“You’ve been around us long enough to know that when I say club business, it’s the end of the conversation.”

“As your lawyer, I expect you to keep me abreast of the situation.”

I arch an eyebrow at her and cross my arms over my chest. “Don’t forget who I am. I’m not your fiancé.”

Destiny looks up and down Main Street and takes a deep breath. “I meant no offense, but...”

“But Kade is in the mix.” I uncross my arms. “Trust me when I tell you, we have steps in motion to prevent bloodshed.”

“I’m going to walk back to my office. I think I need to clear my head.”

She turns and walks away, and I’m left hoping what I’ve just told her doesn’t come back to haunt me.

Chapter Sixteen

DIRT

Never did I imagine a second shot with Lore, and yet here she is, as my existence teeters on the brink of collision with the looming threat of a conflict with the Abruzzi clan. Possessing Lore while remaining in the Savage Angels seems like a dream.

I’m outside Tobias’ room, about to walk in when I hear a conversation within.

“How are you holding up?” asks Lore.

“I’m hanging in there. Doing what I’m told.”

“That’s a first.” She chuckles then says, “I have no doubt you’ll recover, being stubborn runs in our family.”

“Yeah, a family trait.” There’s a pause. “You okay, Mom?”

“You’re the one lying in a hospital bed, and you’re asking about me?”

“Can’t help it. I’m your son. It’s my job to worry about you.”

Lore laughs softly. “Ugh, I’m all over the place.”

“Whatever it is, Mom, you know you can talk to me about it,” he says softly. “I’m here for you, no matter what.”
