“What?”

“Did you chew?” Cheree asks.

Smiling, I look at Janet. “You said there was more?”

“Sure is, in the pot on the stove. Help yourself.”

Standing, I walk into the kitchen and refill my bowl. I can hear the women talking and laughing. It’s good to hear Cheree laugh, makes me feel good to know she’s having a good time.

Walking back into the room Cheree reaches over and pats me on the arm. “Did you leave any for me?”

“Yeah, yeah. Janet made enough for a small army.”

Janet chuckles. “I always cook too much. It’s easy enough to freeze for another time.”

“Smart woman.” I wink at her.

Janet waves a hand at me. “Not really, just practical.”

We finish our meals in silence. When we are done, Janet picks up our bowls and walks them into the kitchen.

“I can do them,” I offer.

“Nonsense. You look dead on your feet.” Janet gestures with her head. “Go down the hall, you two are in the first room on the left, mine’s on the right.”

“Thank you.”

“And the bathroom is at the end of the hall. There’s fresh towels on the bed. Now go, leave me to do this.”

I walk down the hall and find a double bed in the room. Here I was hoping for a comfortable bed and good night’s sleep. I pluck a pillow off the bed and let it drop onto the floor beside it as Cheree walks into the room.

“What are you doing?”

“Only one bed. I’ll take the floor.”

Cheree shakes her head. “No, I’ll take the floor. You look beat.”

“And you’re not?”

“Yeah, but you’re supposed to keep me safe. Can you do that if you’re exhausted?”

Crossing my arms over my chest, I ask, “And how can I let you sleep on the floor?”

Cheree looks at me and tilts her head to the side. “Okay, how about we share the bed? You can sleep on top of the covers, and I can sleep under.”

“What if I want the covers?” I ask with a smirk.

“Fine, but I never took you for the shy type.”

Laughing, I pick up the towel off the bed. “I’m going to shower.”

Cheree nods. “Okay.”

Stripping off, I turn on the faucet and do what I need to do in the small bathroom. It’s only when I get out and I’m toweling off that I realize I left a change of clothes in the bedroom. Wrapping the towel around my waist, I knock on our door and then open it. Cheree is sitting on the end of the bed. Her mouth opens slightly when she looks up at me.

“Sorry, left my clothes in here.” She nods. “Ahh, while you’re showering, I’ll get changed.”

Cheree stands. “Okay.” Her eyes hit the floor and a small smile graces her lips as she picks up her bag, a towel and hurries out of the room.
