“Hungry?”

Looking up at him I nod. “Yeah. You?”

“Starving.”

He takes my hand in his as though we have been doing it for years and guides me down the main street of this town.

“Where are we?”

JD shrugs. “No idea. I’m following my nose.”

We stop outside a café. Its lights are off and the sign on the door says, closed. JD peers inside.

“If you knock, they might let you in.” Turning around I see an older gentleman with a newspaper. “Doug knows when the bus is coming in, he always bakes fresh bread and pastries to entice the occupants.”

Grinning at him, I say, “It worked.”

He chuckles. “It always does.”

JD knocks on the door and a light comes on. A man bustles out from the back, wiping his hands on his apron.

He opens the door. “We don’t open until nine.”

“Pfft! Come on Doug, they’re hungry and so am I.” The old man waves his paper at Doug.

“Did you tell them to knock, Tom?”

“You know I did. Are you going to let paying customers just wait out here on the sidewalk?”

Doug narrows his gaze and opens the door wider. “Make it quick.”

Tom grins at us. “Come on.” He walks inside and JD and I follow him.

“Coffee?” asks Tom as he closes and locks the door.

“Two please, to go,” replies JD.

Tom walks behind the counter and starts up his coffee machine. “Tom, you want coffee?”

“Nah, don’t like the way you roast the beans.” His lips turn down. “But I will take one of those croissants with chocolate if you made some. Actually, I’ll have two.”

Doug gives him a withering look then looks at us. “What about you two? I’ve got pain au chocolat−”

“That’s his fancy way of say chocolate croissants,” interrupts Tom.

Doug places our coffees on the counter and puts his hands on his hips, glaring at Tom. This all feels like a dance they’ve done a thousand times before. I giggle and all eyes come to me.

“Besides the chocolate croissants do you have anything with fruit?”

“Fruit?” asks JD.

Tilting my head back to look up at him, I nod. “Yeah, I like fruit.”

“I’ve got apple Danish?” Doug offers.

Smiling, I say, “I’ll have two.”

“Ahh, actually I’ll have a chocolate croissant,” interjects JD.
