“Maybe a little.” Sadie shrugged.

“Yeah, that’s valid. Maybe you should come with me. Maybe you could help me pick out what to wear?” If Sadie was with her, then she couldn’t change her mind and she knew herself well enough to know that was a very real possibility.

“That sounds fun! Although what you’re wearing is fine too. I wear a uniform on days Daddy makes me wear one, but you can wear almost anything,” she explained as they began to walk together back to Piper’s room.

“I want to fit in. My hair kinda makes me stick out enough as it is.”

Sadie laughed. “I love your hair.”

“Thanks. I don’t hate it, it just is very… noticeable.”

“Yeah, I could see where that might be a problem.” Sadie nodded. “Especially if you needed to not be noticed for… you know… reasons.”

“I feel like you’re alluding to something and I’m missing it,” Piper answered honestly. “That kind of happens a lot with me. I don’t really understand when people talk in circles around things. I’m more of a direct type.”

“I can be more direct when we are outta the range of bossy ears.”

“Okay.” Piper looked around at the people who could overhear their conversation. Everyone seemed to be lost in their own worlds, but what did she know?

Once in her room, Piper dropped the bag of her purchases on the loveseat and went to her suitcase. “I like to wear colorful things,” she explained as she unzipped it and flipped it open.

“Oh fun!” Sadie clapped.

Piper hadn’t really known what to pack, but she had grabbed a few of her favorite things along with more sensible and dull outfits just in case she needed them.

Pulling things out, she began to toss them on her bed.

“Oh this shirt will match the new socks I just got!” she squealed in excitement as she quickly retrieved the bag from the Ranch store.

She had so much fun allowing Sadie to help her get dressed that she forgot all of her fears and insecurities. She just let herself be in the moment and it was so freeing.

“Wait!” Sadie put out her hands and stopped Piper just as they were about to head out of the room. “You can’t wear those cute socks and not let anyone see them, that’s gotta be like some kinda law or something.”

She fell to her knees in front of Piper and rolled the cuffs of her jeans to just below her knees.

“That doesn’t look ridiculous?” Piper asked as she surveyed herself in the mirror. “Maybe I should at least wear matching socks if I’m gonna wear my pants like this.”

“Nah! It’s fun and I bet you’ll get so many compliments. You know who you remind me of?”

“Who?” Piper was still looking in the mirror. The longer she stood there the cuter she thought she looked.

“Pippi Longstocking,” Sadie told her.

“Pippi was my hero growing up. I’m kind of obsessed with her actually. I think I have read and watched every single thing she was ever the star of. They called me Pippi in grade school.”

“I love that! We should call you Pippi! Can we? Please?””

“Sure.” Piper smiled. Having people call her something that took her back to her childhood might actually help her brain with the type of situation she was going to be walking in to. “I kind of love that idea actually.”

“Yay!” Sadie clapped again. “Oh shoot, we better run so we aren’t late. They kinda frown upon that around here.” Sadie rolled her eyes dramatically. “And I might be a repeat offender. I can’t help it; there are so many things to do that are more interesting than school.”

“What class are we going to?” Piper asked as they left the room and began to speed walk down the hall.

“It’s a lifestyle safety class. Daddy makes us all take it for refreshers and stuff because he wants us all to be safe. Today just happens to be the day I’m supposed to attend.”

“It just so happened that way, huh?” Piper questioned, not believing her new friend at all.

“Well, maybe not but if I do it today, I won’t have to do it on my assigned day. I might even get brownie points for doing it without being reminded. A brat like me can always use extra brownie points,” she confessed.
