Kay cocked her head to the side and smiled. “Pips, we’ve been friends since second grade. I swear I know you better than you know yourself sometimes. You really don’t think I didn’t know that already?”

In her drunken fog, Piper tried to reconcile what her friend was telling her.

“How did you know?”

“Okay, maybe I didn’t know know, but I always suspected. When you used to date that guy before Hank. I found a napkin for the BDSM club in your car. I was about to ask you about it but then you broke it off with him and got with Hank. I figured if you wanted me to know then you would tell me eventually.”

“I thought I was so careful,” she mused.

“You were. Careful and secretive and I didn’t want to pry, but I’ve got a secret of my own, sweets. I’m a switch.”

“You are?” Piper sat up quickly, almost falling out of her bed as the room spun in front of her.

“Whoa there.” Kay grabbed her by the shoulders and held her steady. “Yes, I am. I’ve been in the lifestyle a long time. Longer than I should have been because I was way too young to be doing some of those things in the beginning.”

“That’s so cool. I’m a brat so I couldn’t be in it anymore.”

Kay’s eyebrows knitted together. “What do you mean?”

“The Dom. Alex. The one I dated. He said no one would ever love me because I was a brat. He kicked me out and I can’t be in it anymore.”

If Piper had ever seen Kay mad, she’d never seen her as mad as she was in that very moment. The other woman turned six shades of red and Piper swore she saw smoke coming out of her ears.

The calm in her voice did not match the rage on her face. “I’m sorry? Can you repeat that please?”

Piper shook her head and began to scoot away. “I’m not a brat anymore. I promise. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you mad. I stopped all of that a long time ago. I didn’t fit in. No one likes brats.”

She was used to not fitting in. She was the tall, lanky goofy redhead who stuck out like a sore thumb wherever she went. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to her when she hadn’t fit in at the club back then.

Kay shook her head slowly. “Don’t you dare apologize to me, young lady. You did nothing wrong. But I need you to explain to me exactly what happened.”

“I’m not sure that’s the best idea.” She felt small and unsure, and all she wanted more than anything in that moment was to have Kay’s smile back. “I didn’t mean to make you so angry.” Tears filled her eyes and she was helpless to do anything but allow them to spill down her cheeks.

That seemed to jar Kay out of her anger and she took a deep breath before sitting on the side of the bed.

“I’m not mad at you, Pips. I’m mad at the asshole who lied to you. People like him give our lifestyle a bad name. I’m also mad at myself. I should have asked about things back then. I should have opened up to you and told you I understood and then maybe you wouldn’t have gone through all of that alone. Fuck, I can’t even imagine how much that fucked up your head. I’m sorry, girly.”

Piper hadn’t anticipated this conversation, let alone the reaction she was getting from her best friend, but as much as it hurt to talk about that time, it felt so good to get it off her chest after holding it all in for twenty years, and there was no one on planet Earth she trusted more than Kay.

“It was my nineteenth birthday,” she began to explain. “I brought a confetti stick to the club. It was small and full of tissue-paper pieces. I didn’t think it would cause any harm, but I thought it would be a funny way to announce my birthday. He didn’t see it that way. He’d made a couple of comments before about me being such a brat, but I knew I was a brat. I thought it was okay. I was told to be myself. I was lied to. No one got mad when I did it, everyone around us laughed and told me ‘happy birthday’ until they saw his face. Then they gave us a wide berth and just let him tear into me. I thought I had friends there. I thought submissives looked out for one another. I just told myself I wasn’t only too much for him, but too much for everyone else. So I left.”

“Hold on. Wait. Let me make sure I’m understanding this…” Kay took a deep breath like she was barely holding on to her anger. “You played a harmless prank on your birthday and he couldn’t deal?”

“I guess.” Piper shrugged.

“Yeah, that’s a him problem, girly. Not a you problem. Most Doms I know, present company included, would have beat your ass good for something like that. Maybe made it interesting by making you clean it up naked with a plug in your ass. But mistreat you for it? Verbally abuse you for it? Absolutely not.” Kay stopped talking and stared into the distance like she was lost in thought. “Please tell me this isn’t why you stopped celebrating your birthday.”

Piper nibbled her lip, not wanting to admit it was, in fact, the exact reason. Her birthday was just another reminder that she would never be accepted for who she was.

Kay shook her head. “You don’t even have to answer. I can tell by the look on your face.” She sighed and scrubbed her hands over her face. “I’m going to find that man and chop his balls off and feed them to him,” she muttered.

Piper opened her eyes in pure shock and a little fear. Who was this woman? “That’s a little violent.”

“Trust me, it was tame compared to what I’m picturing in my mind. Anyways, since I don't have a time machine and don’t know anything about this guy to hunt him down, and I’d look hideous in one of those orange prison jumpsuits anyway, all we can do is move forward.”

“That’s what I did.” Piper shrugged again.

Kay raised a brow and a vaguely familiar niggle tickled Piper’s tummy. She hugged herself to make it stop.
