Catherine sounded a little unsure and it made Piper nervous too.

“How about dinner?” Catherine asked.

Piper shook her head even though she knew the other woman could not see her. “I don’t think that's a good idea after what happened.” She didn’t want to have to think about this all day and she didn’t want to accidentally stand them up again if she didn’t remember their date. “Could you maybe meet earlier?”

“Oh, sure we can! Would lunch work?”

“How about breakfast?” Piper pushed as she jumped out of bed and headed to her suitcase to find something to change into in case Catherine said yes.

“I think we can do a quick breakfast. We’re on our drive there now. How soon can you be ready?”

“Ten minutes?” Piper asked more than stated. She probably could be ready quicker if she had to be, but ten minutes would give her a minute to breathe once they hung up.

“Perfect. We will get a spot in the cafe and wait for you. I have to say I’m really looking forward to getting to know you.”

“Me too,” Piper answered and for the first time realized that wasn’t really a lie. No one had shown this much interest in her in years, and it made her feel excited to see what these people were all about.

As soon as they hung up, she jumped into action getting ready as fast as possible. She looked at the clock to make sure she left time to get from her room to the cafe and then ran into the bathroom to get ready.

CHAPTER TEN

Catherine shook her leg and kept her eyes glued to the entrance of the cafe. She was so nervous and yet so excited. She’d thought she’d blown it the night before, but the fact that Piper was so eager to meet made her excited about the future.

Sam put his hand on her bouncing leg and gave a little squeeze. “Keep your expectations reasonable, my love,” he reminded her.

“I am,” she lied. She was already making plans in her head for the future. She couldn’t help it. “There she is,” she said as she spotted Piper’s bright red hair coming toward the cafe from across the lobby.

“Deep breaths, baby,” Sam said as they stood to greet her.

Catherine waved to get her attention. The shy smile that crossed Piper’s face was too adorable for words and her gait slowed a little as she made her way toward them. She was nervous. Well, that made two of them.

“Hi.” She half waved as she stepped up to the table.

“Good morning, sweetie. Would it be okay to give you a hug?”

Piper nodded and Catherine stepped up to give her a tight squeeze. “This is my husband Sam,” she introduced him when she stepped back again.

“Nice to meet you.” Piper put her hand out to him and Sam took it.

“It’s nice to meet you too, Piper.” He smiled.

Catherine nibbled her lip as she watched Sam take Piper in.

“I’m glad you could join us,” he told her.

“Yeah, me too. I’m really sorry about last night and I didn’t like the idea of being nervous all day or getting distracted and forgetting again. I’m sorry for being so pushy.”

“You’ve already apologized for last night, no need to worry about that any longer and you weren’t pushy, you made a request and we were able to oblige,” Catherine assured her. Over apologizing was a big issue for a lot of people and it was something she helped a lot of her patients overcome. She would help guide Piper if that was something she would be open to.

Piper nodded. “Right.”

“Should we order some food?” Sam asked.

“I’m not sure I can eat with how nervous I am. But you can eat. I don’t mind.”

“Do you typically skip meals?” Catherine asked.

Piper bit her lip and nodded. “Sometimes I just kind of forget to eat. Sometimes food just doesn’t sound good.”
