“No, Sir.” She shook her head, but she wished she hadn’t given in so easily. Going to bed after being spanked had been a fantasy of hers for so, so long, but she had never had the chance to experience it.

“Okay then. Up you go. I want you to go potty and brush your teeth and we will be in to tuck you in as soon as we clean this all up,” he instructed.

She looked back at Ms. Cat, hoping maybe she would let her stay up just a little longer.

“You heard him, honey. Bedtime.”

“Yes, Ma’am.” She sighed heavily as she got to her feet and pouted her way down the hall. It probably wasn’t even eight p.m. How was she supposed to go to bed so early?

She went through her very short bedtime routine and caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Her oversized colorful sleep shirt coupled with her French-braided pigtails and the relaxed look on her face made a really adorable picture. She was going to be forty in two days and yet she looked and felt like she was no older than seven. And she loved it.

“I hope you’re getting ready for bed, little girl,” Ms. Cat announced from the bathroom door.

“I am. I’m all done. I was just…” She looked back at herself in the mirror and pointed. “I don’t even recognize myself.”

Ms. Cat approached her. “Does that bother you?” She ran her fingers along a stray hair that had escaped, tucking it back into its braid.

“No, I don’t think so.” Pippi shook her head. “It’s just kinda weird, isn’t it?”

Ms. Cat shrugged. “It’s Ranch magic.”

Pippi smiled. “I guess so. Can I ask you somethin’?”

“You can as we tuck you into bed. C’mon.” Ms. Cat took her hand and led her out of the bathroom and to the side of the bed where Mr. Sam had turned down the sheet and blanket. She was glad he was there because her question was more for him anyway.

“You keep accidentally referring to yourself and Ms. Cat as… uh…” Why was it so hard to say?

“Daddy and Mommy?” he offered.

“Yeah. That. You said it one time but all the other times you keep stopping yourself.”

“Well, sweetie, I can’t help it. Ms. Cat knew from the moment she saw you that there was something special about you and the more I get to know you, the more I think she’s right. We both believe you’re meant to be ours, it just feels right. However, we don’t want to force anything. It has to be your choice. A choice you’re happy and comfortable with.”

That was a lot all at once and Pippi was going to need to unpack it all when she was alone.

“So you want me to call you M-Mommy and Daddy?” She stumbled over the words.

“We want you to call us that if you want to call us that,” Ms. Cat reiterated.

“Okay, I understand.”

“Would it bother you if we referred to ourselves as such but didn’t require you to use those titles until or if you’re ready?” Mr. Sam asked.

Would it? She didn’t think it would. Maybe hearing it would actually help her get more comfortable with the idea that this could be her future. They could be her future.

“No, it wouldn’t bother me. I like it. I like you both a lot and I’m really grateful for everything that has happened today.”

“We’re grateful you’ve given us a chance.” Ms. Cat leaned down and kissed her forehead as Mr. Sam tucked the blanket around her.

“There you go. Snug as a bug. Oh, wait!” Mr. Sam all but jogged out of the room.

She looked at Ms. Cat confused and got only a shrug as an answer.

He came back carrying a bag from the Ranch store. “A little birdie told me that a certain special Little girl didn’t have a stuffie with her and so I took it upon myself to get her one because every Pippi needs a Mr. Nilson and Horse.” He pulled two stuffies out of the bag and gave them to her.

“They look just like the ones the real Pippi Longstocking has!”

“Yep. Google is a beautiful thing and thankfully the Ranch store has a vast array of choices.”
