She had already told them at lunch that she’d made plans with Sadie for the evening and that she would be staying in her suite instead of going home with them. She wished it could have been different because being tucked in and loved on before bed had been pretty amazing, but the only time the prank crew would be able to get anything done was after everyone went to bed. The couple had seemed just as bummed as she was that they would be going home without her which made her feel loved, but they didn’t push it either which she was more than thankful for.

She grabbed her phone and hoped beyond hope she would catch them before they left. She shot off a text asking them to meet her in the lobby so she could say bye to them before they left for the night.

We were just leaving, Ms. Cat responded.

Can I come say goodnight? Her heart pounded in her chest. This was the crossroads. This would be the last time she could change her mind.

We would love that, sweetie. We will wait near the fireplace.

Be right there!

Pippi tossed the phone on her bed and left quickly. By the time she got to the lobby, she felt like she’d run a marathon with how hard her heart was pumping.

She spotted them right away and tried to calm her breathing. She was going to give herself away if she was too nervous.

Both of them smiled at her when they saw her and she couldn’t help it, she ran to them and grabbed them both in a tight hug. As much as she didn’t want to think about it, they could want nothing to do with her after tonight. She wanted to soak in their love and be thankful for the time she had with them. Without her permission, tears filled her eyes.

“Are you okay, little one?” Mr. Sam asked.

“Yes, I just… I kinda wish I was just coming home with you.”

“You still can,” Ms. Cat told her,

Pippi shook her head. “I promised Sadie.”

“Well, then why don’t you let us come back and get you.”

“No, it will be late. I’ll be okay. I have Mr. Nilson and Horse and I was hoping maybe I could borrow Ellie?”

“From my office? I’m sure he would love to come and have a sleepover with you. Let’s go get him.”

Ms. Cat pulled out her keys.

“Hi, Mr. And Ms. Denten!” Sadie yelled.

Right on time.

“I have a question for you,” Sadie told them.

Pippi had no idea how she was going to pull it off, but Sadie was well practiced in the art of the prank, so she just had to trust it was all going to go her way.

“I can just go grab him while you talk to Sadie.” Pippi put out her hand for the keys, knowing if Ms. Cat decided not to give them to her, the entire plan was foiled.

“Okay, but get him and come right out.”

“I will. I’ll be super quick.”

Ms. Cat handed her the keys and turned her attention back to Sadie.

Pippi didn’t wait to hear what Sadie asked, she booked it to Ms. Cat’s office. It felt like her heart was pounding in her ears as she took the electrical tape out of her pocket and taped the lock so that it would not catch when she shut the door again, then she grabbed Ellie and headed back to the Dentens. Guilt sat heavy in her stomach as she handed the keys back to Ms. Cat and gave them one last hug. She stood with Sadie and watched them leave with tears running down her cheeks.

“Are you okay?” Sadie asked as she put her arm around her.

“They’re going to hate me,” Pippi whispered.

“I promise you they will not. Not even a little bit. It’s a harmless prank. But if you don’t want to go through with it, then don’t. No one has to know.”

“I’ll know.” Pippi shook her head. “I have to do it. I have to know for sure.”
