Barry’s neck almost snapped as he turned to look at his friend. “You do?”

Coming from a man who considered most people to be tedious and annoying, ‘I like her’ was high praise.

“You like her?” Barry repeated.

“I do.” Nigel smiled. “She’s interesting.”

Barry was both pleased and terrified at that answer. He warned, “I don’t do threesomes. Xolani’s mine and mine alone.”

Nigel burst into laughter.

It was almost as if Xolani knew they were talking about her because she called right then.

An automatic smile curled Barry’s lips as he picked the call. “Hey, Beautiful.”

“Hey, handsome,” she replied with a smile in her voice. “What are you up to?”

“Play Station with Nigel,” Barry explained shortly while glancing at his friend. Nigel mimed to ask him to greet her. So he added, “He says hi.”

“Hi to him too,” Xolani replied. A chorus of ‘Hi, Barry’ rang in her background, and she said, “Anika and Justine say hi too.”

“Oh, they’re there with you?” he asked. “The wedding’s not over?”

“We’re heading to the reception right now.”

Having heard all the drama behind the scenes of that wedding, Barry jokingly asked, “So Justine didn’t stand up and protest during the vows?”

Xolani laughed. “She thought about it, but realized that Simon might start stalking her again if he loses his wife.”

“I’m glad she let those poor souls get married.” Barry chuckled. “Tell her and Anika that I said hi back.”

“Actually, they’re the ones who made me call you.” After a brief pause, Xolani added, “They’re asking if you want to watch a movie with us on Saturday.”

“A movie?” He asked, “Which one?”

“Which one?” Xolani spoke to her friends.

Justine’s voice echoed loudly over the line. “The Theory of Murder.”

“The Theory of Murder,” Xolani repeated to Barry.

“Isn’t that like a horror movie?” Barry had watched the trailer, and it was all blood, gore, and corpses. He frowned. “You don’t like horror.”

Xolani didn’t disagree. “I’ll just wash my eyes and brain with bleach afterward.”

Justine shouted in the background. “You can come and be her protector.”

“It’s okay if you’re busy.” Xolani said, “You don’t have to come.”

“No, no. I’m not busy.” He would never ever miss an opportunity to spend more time with her. Furthermore, since the movie was scary, whoever sat next to her would be blessed with tight holds and hugs. How could he turn that down? He grinned. “I’ll come and watch the movie with you.”

“He’ll come,” Xolani said to her friends. She came back to Barry with, “Would Nigel like to come too?”

Immediately there were choruses of ‘who’s Nigel?’ on her end of the line.

She murmured to them, “He’s Barry’s friend.”

Meanwhile, on Barry’s end, he was still reeling from the request. His eyes swept to his friend as he spoke to Xolani. “You want Nigel to come too?”
