Barry? What the hell was he doing here?

19

BARRY WAS SO FURIOUS IT felt like his whole body was vibrating with the emotion. He pressed Xolani’s doorbell with more force than necessary as he waited for her to open the door.

As soon as she’d picked that phone call from Justine, he’d known that it was fake. Xolani wasn’t as good an actress as she thought she was. Immediately, he wanted to follow her out and confront her, but Misty held him back. Misty clung to his arm and tried to get him to stay. Only a fierce scowl and furious, ‘Get your hands off me’ had made the lady back away from him in alarm.

Unfortunately, by the time he got to the parking lot, Xolani’s car was gone.

Working on a hunch, he drove straight to Xolani’s place. And wouldn’t you know it? Her car was parked in her spot. So much for that bullshit about Anika!

Open up. He pressed the doorbell more furiously.

It took several more presses, but eventually, there was a beep then the door opened. And there Xolani was, staring at him with an icy coldness that he’d never experienced from her. She didn’t even say hi. She left the door open for him to enter if he wished and walked away.

Her coldness only annoyed him more. Furiously, he took off his shoes then followed her to the living room. He demanded, “What the hell was that?”

“What the hell was what?” she nonchalantly asked.

Her nonchalance only annoyed him more. He crossly reminded her, “You left me at the restaurant with Misty.”

“And?” Xolani sat down on the sectional. “Did you have a good time?”

“Did I have a- Xo?” The absurdity of her question left him dumbfounded. “Are you serious right now?”

“I am.” She stared up at him. “Did you two have sex?”

Barry’s jaw dropped, and he just stared at her. Where had she even pulled that question from? As if he would ever have sex with Misty.

“How? How could I have had sex with her?” He pointed out the obvious. “I got here just ten minutes behind you.”

Her eyes lowered to his groin, and she mocked, “Ten minutes is enough.”

Now she was insulting his manhood?

“You’re unbelievable.” He sat down on the armchair that was closest to her. “How do you even have the balls to fire shots when you’re the one who left me with her? I’m the one who’s supposed to be angry.”

“What would you be angry about? You invited her to our table, so I thought that meant you wanted her company.” Sarcasm dripped heavily from Xolani’s tone and gaze. “I was doing you a favor.”

“You call that a favor?” Barry demanded, “Did I look like someone who wanted her company?”

“Hey, I’m not a face reader?” Xolani shrugged. “I was just going by your words.”

His voice rose. “You’re not that dumb!”

“Uh-uh, don’t yell at me,” she warned with a scowl. “You have no right to be mad at me. No right at all. I’m the one who should be pissed off this situation. You promised me a nice dinner, but instead I had to deal with one of your deranged fangirls.”

Barry started to defend himself, “How was that my f_”

Xolani cut him off. “You know that Misty stalked you to the restaurant, right?”

“What? No!” He hadn’t even thought of that because it was too ridiculous. “No way.”

“Oh, come on, Barry.” Xolani laughed, but there was no humor in the brittle sound, and her eyes remained icy. “Do you really believe that she accidentally waltzed into the same secluded restaurant as us just a few minutes after you signed out of work? In that dress? If you do, then I have a bridge to sell you.”

Now that Barry thought of it, Misty’s appearance was too much of a coincidence.

“If you suspected that she stalked me,” he demanded, “why didn’t you call her out?”
