“Why?” She releases the older girl’s hand and reaches up to swipe beneath her eye. “Why not close the case? Why take punishment from your boss for me?”
“Because I’d have done the same.” I allow my smile free and hope to god this woman isn’t a hugger. “And he loves me. Sometimes, the law isn’t fair to victims.”
“Go.” Archer wraps one hand around my elbow, and the other around the handle of the cart. He drags me back gently, creating space between us and a killer. “Enjoy your life. Enjoy freedom with your girls. You’ve earned it. Let’s go,” he leans closer to me, steering us between a row of racks and forcing me to walk away. “Don’t look back. You’ve done enough for her.”
“You did the right thing.” Releasing the cart, since Archer is doing all the work anyway, I wrap my arm around his instead and cuddle into his side. “It stings a little to let a case fall, but you know it’s right.”
“Now I deserve my reward.” He grabs that damn polka dot bikini and tosses the set into our cart. “Ready for your honeymoon, Mrs. Malone?”
I let out a soft laugh and allow him this one chance to claim ownership. I’m keeping my name, and I’m a damn doctor.
I earned it.
I honor it.
But I’m his wife too.
I’m a Mrs. And I belong to a Malone.
Surprisingly, I’m completely and totally okay with that.
