“Evan is coming up on your menu in the next couple of days, and then other eagle shifters in a line after him.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I agree with sending Venom and Evan, and I’ll get with them about who else to send. Kirsten personally invited you?”

“With a phone call, yes.” And since he knew, that meant Cora had likely let him know the invitation was coming. A heads-up would’ve been nice, but I trusted Marco had his reasons for not sharing ahead of time.

“That brings me to my next point of note,” he said. “The president of the local biker chapter went through official channels to invite me and my top people to a party this Saturday night at their compound. Me and my top five, and we’re all welcome to bring a guest. He asked me to get him a guest list Thursday evening, at the latest, so the guards manning the gate would know who to allow through.”

“Six days’ notice?”

“They don’t believe in planning things months in advance in this century.”

“The Concilio still does.”

He nodded. “The bikers do not. If you want to bring the slayer, that’s fine. Might not be a good idea to bring your new pet eagle, though. Venom will likely take Andreas. I could order Evan to go as your date.”

We’d talked about Evan’s reaction to me, and why I didn’t expect him to want to ever fuck me again, and why having our head-of-security feel this way about vampires wasn’t ideal.

Marco still wanted me to have more than a casual relationship with Evan, though. Not necessarily romantic or sexual, but comfortable with each other.

“Ryan hasn’t called to let me know he’s back in town. It’s possible he’s finished with me.”

“Let me know your decision before the sun rises Thursday morning, please.”

“Are you still leaving for Mobile this evening?”

He shook his head. “I’ve shifted everything forward so I’ll be leaving tomorrow night, after the meeting with our security shifters. I’ll be oathing the Master Vampire and top echelon in Mobile, then driving across into Mississippi to sign the paperwork for the new casino I’m buying, oathing the Master and his top three people, flying to Birmingham to meet with the Master of Alabama and get her personal oath, and she’s offered to share a giant honey badger in human form, for our meal. I’m looking forward to it.”

“Brooke bothers me.”

“Brooke bothers all of us, except for perhaps Kendric, in Florida.”

Kendric. Caligula. I’d been given to him as a plaything years before, and he bothered me, too. He’s best friends with his fears, which means I found them but couldn’t feed from them. He’s in love now, and I couldn’t help but wonder if that’d changed him.

Not enough to voluntarily be in the same room with him again, though.

“You have a problem with Kendric?” Marco asked.

“I was loaned to him a while back. The rumors about his cruelty don’t go far enough.”

“I knew you’d been gifted to him for a short time. I’m sorry for it.” He sighed. “I got you out as soon as I could manage it.”

“I know you did, and I will be forever grateful for it. I assume you have a list of things for me to stay on top of while you’re gone?” Marco wasn’t to blame for anything that happened to me. He’d rescued me, but I didn’t want to dwell on that during this conversation.

He shook his head. “Patience has the list. If anything needs handling, she’ll notify you, but she’ll stay on top of everything. If my scouts find someone to bring on board as flock, you might need to step in and oath them before they change their mind. I can’t think of anything else that won’t be able to wait until my return.”

“Do you have a time for the meeting tomorrow night?”

“Six fifteen, which is forty minutes past sunset, in the conference building beside TBC. Do you want to invite Ryan, or would you prefer I do so?”

I shook my head. “It’ll give me an excuse to call him. I’ll do it.”

“You’ve been making your way through the flock, on your feeding schedule. Anything of note?”

“The little human girl I fed from last night has someone bothering her. A guy who won’t take no for an answer keeps insisting she have a meal with him after class. I sent a note to Evan to have one of his people handy when she gets out of class today to deal with it, and I received a report detailing how the situation was handled. Another human from a few days ago, little gay twink, was terrified about his GPA coming down because he’s having trouble in his statistics class. He’s making a high C, which isn’t enough for one of us to be notified of a problem, but he has a three-point nine-something GPA and he was all torn up about what a C would do to it. I texted Jayce and asked him who he recommended as a tutor, and sent a request to Patience, who set it up so the coterie is paying for the tutoring.”

He lifted a brow. “Thanks for both of those. Patience let me know about the tutoring, but I wasn’t aware of the stalker problem.”

“I assumed you’d see it on a report from Evan. Do you want me to report this kind of thing to you? Seemed trivial. Not the kind of thing I’m used to reporting. Handle it and move on.”

“No need to tell me if you go through Patience — let her know about this kind of thing so she can put it on my daily reports.” He stood. “Jayce alerted me to a problem on campus I need to handle before morning. Let’s make plans to feed together before we leave for the biker’s party Saturday night. I’ll take my repose at the coterie house Saturday morning, so we can spend some time together when we rise.”
