“You can’t lie without giving yourself away?”

“I can, but I have a feeling the slayer knows truth versus lie without the need of scent markers, and likely not the micro-expressions the birds read, either.”

Venom nodded and stood. “Patience is using our whiteboard program to hand out jobs. You remember your login?”

“Of course.”

He closed the door on the way out of my office, and I pulled up the program he’d mentioned.

She wanted me to dip into the mind of everyone on the premises to see what they knew about the situation — vampire, shapeshifter, human. Everyone. Customers, employees, security people.

It made sense. If you’d done the deed, you’d want someone on the premises to keep track of activity and monitor how frantic everyone was. We were bringing our people into the convention center next door, and…

A telepathic knock sounded in my head, and I felt for the energy of it. Isaac, an imperator crocodile shifter who owned half of this establishment. He handled the daytime, we handled the night. I knew him quite well, and had met his three partners on several occasions. Well, partner, submissive, and slave. All humans, and two of them knew nothing about supernaturals — and he wished to keep it so. He was madly in love with them, and they were to be protected no matter the cost. Angering an imperator crocodile would be bad. Killing or even injuring one of his lovers would be magnitudes worse.

Yes, Isaac?

I’ve been apprised of the situation. Anything I can do on my end?

Patience is handing out jobs, but it’s probably best you stay home and keep your people safe. It looks like one of your partners has an older model vehicle you can use, so you’re welcome to bring everyone here, but your property is deemed safe.

The engine is torn apart, so it isn’t currently functional.

I’ll make a note for someone to come get you in the morning, to bring you to work.

We’ll need a ride for three of us to get to work, and I don’t want to leave Cam here alone, so I’ll bring him to work with me. A telepathic sigh. And the dog.

I’ll make sure whoever picks you up has room for all four of you, plus a German Shepherd. Once you’re here, we’ll get Frisco and Cassie to work. It might be good to bring a few changes of clothes with you.

We have another house in the city. We’ll plan to stay in town until this is resolved, but we’ll need transportation to and from work.

That was right. Their primary home was quite far away, nearly an hour, but Isaac hadn’t sold his home when he’d moved in with them, and the foursome sometimes chose not to make the drive to their primary residence.

Cam will bring his laptop, Isaac telepathed, and he can work out of the backroom of my office. If he doesn’t have enough graphics jobs to keep him busy, we can put him to work in the kitchen, washing dishes and handling simple cooking duties. I’ll work that out with Jayce tomorrow. If you need muscle, you know you have it, just make sure whoever picks me up has room for my people. They can sleep in the backroom of my office if there won’t be time to get them to our home in the city, or if it isn’t deemed safe for them to be off on their own.

I appreciate the offer. Having you at our backs is a bonus, and it’s appreciated. I’ll make sure Patience knows the offer has been made, since she’s the one coordinating with Marco.

I’m happy he and Cora are safe.

The connection faded away, meaning he closed it. Most shapeshifters can’t do that, but Isaac isn’t an ordinary shapeshifter. I was pretty sure he’d wipe the floor with even Cora, and possibly the Amakhosi, the Lion King. Probably not the Dragon King, but one couldn’t be certain.

I sent a note to Patience on the whiteboard program, letting her know Isaac’s needs, and a few minutes later, I saw someone listed on the schedule to pick him and his people (and dog) up early the next morning and bring them to TBC, and two more people assigned to get Frisco and Cassie to work, once they arrived here.

Vampires often like to hold onto older vehicles, so we had a number of classic cars, and it turned out, a whole lot of older motorcycles. The bikers were also available to drive people in either a car or on a bike, and Patience had one of them assigned to pick the foursome up in a Ford Bronco the next morning, which would work well with the dog. It also made sense, since one of Isaac’s partners was brother to the MC President’s wife. No, that wasn’t right. She was his wife, but we were supposed to call her his old lady.

I leaned back, closed my eyes, and methodically went through the minds of everyone in the building, starting with the customers, but no one was watching for activity, and I didn’t see any knowledge of what had been done to Marco and Cora.

I went through the convention center next door as well, but again, came up with nothing.

Three hours later, I checked in with Patience to let her know I’d finished my task, and she asked me to ride with one of our weaker vampires as security, while he acted as taxi driver, picking people up and bringing them to TBC.

I telepathed Ryan before I left my office.

I trust you have enough information, anything I tell you would be unnecessary?

I believe so. I’m happy to hear Cora and Marco are safe.

There’s no reason to believe the perpetrators will be after you, but it would be nice if you happen to have an older vehicle to drive.
