“Young?” I asked. “I assume he’s of legal age?”

“He turns nineteen in three days.”

I smiled. “Well, perhaps I’ll offer a special early-birthday present to the boy. I thank you for your hospitality.”

“I expect we have at least an hour, possibly two, before Kelsey rises, and we’ll need to leave within five minutes of her contacting me, so get the feeding bit out of the way first,” Marco told me.

Honestly, there’s nothing quite like having sex with an exuberant nineteen-year-old werewolf male. They are led by their hormones at that age, and the fact I could give him an orgasm every fifteen minutes and keep him hard had the poor boy so crazy with lust, I got a damned good fucking from the young man.

We had an hour and twenty minutes of crazy sex, and I fed from his neck and his dick to the extent I knew he’d need to change to replenish when we finished, but I didn’t take so much he couldn’t keep fucking me.

And then I had time for a one-minute shower, was back in my dress, and inside the lightproof bag and in a moving vehicle seven minutes after Marco sent me the signal that Kelsey was awake, which was barely five minutes after their phone call ended. I wasn’t certain why he’d phoned her rather than telepathing her, unless it was so her shapeshifters had a record of the conversation, since I was aware Drake Security was monitoring all her modern-day communications.

Twenty-five minutes later, we pulled into yet another garage, and Marco was carried into the shapeshifters’ basement while I remained in place, but he stayed open to me, so I saw and heard everything he did, and so I could come to his rescue, should the shapeshifters present decide to go against protocol and threaten the Master Vampire.

None of us thought that likely, but old vampires don’t get that way by being stupid or taking chances.

And I’d taken a huge chance, allowing the dawn to take me in a bed beside a sleeping slayer. There are multiple safe rooms available in the vicinity of my office, but it felt like a huge deal that he slept in my presence, and it seemed important I return the favor.

Stupid, since he was merely asleep, and I was completely dead to the world, but there it is. I’d wanted to show him the same level of trust.

Marco got straight to business, explaining what we both sensed to Kelsey and the three men tasked with overseeing the baby vampire and making sure she wasn’t a danger to any mortals with a heartbeat — human, shifter, or other.

I didn’t want to like Kelsey, but she was intelligent and tenacious — two attributes I happen to respect, especially when used in conjunction. I still wasn’t certain I liked her, but respect isn’t such a bad starting point.

Kelsey doesn’t come from a line that can generally feed from lust or other emotions, but some have been rumored to take on the powers of those they oath to. Not as a baby vamp, though — only after they’ve grown powerful. We needed to pull this little baby vamp back into the coterie house, so we could keep a closer eye on her.

Or, perhaps not. She was growing in power unusually fast while living with her shapeshifters, and it’s possible someone in the coterie might decide to take her out because they realize she’s rapidly becoming as powerful as them, and they’d want to wipe her off the board before that happened. Punishment for doing so would likely be severe, but there are ways around the rules.

Still, I felt it important Marco and I form a closer bond with her while she grew in power, because a thousand years from now, possibly sooner, there was a good chance she’d be stronger than us.

Hell, at the rate she was going, she might rule vampirekind in five hundred years.

And that pissed me off because she was such a timid little thing. This vampire needed to learn to embrace her power. To make friends with it.

Marco telepathed me, I need you to talk to your slayer about either providing someone we can kill, or sanctioning us to find someone he’ll agree needs to die.

Fuck, but having the slayer nosing into our business was going to be a huge pain in the ass. I’d have just gone and found a human no one would miss, if we weren’t being watched so fucking closely by a slayer, but Marco was right that we were going to have to pull him into this. I thumbed my phone on and made the call, and he answered on the first ring.

“This is an official call, not a personal one. I’m calling on Marco’s orders.”

“Okay.” Matter of fact. I got nothing from his one-word answer.

“We need someone with a heartbeat for this vampire to kill. Today would be good.”

“I’m going to need more information.”

Marco had known he would, so I didn’t doublecheck to see how much I could explain. “She’s feeding off of lust or sex, I’m unclear on the specifics, but it doesn’t matter because the fastest way to teach her to be afraid of her new skill is to force her to kill someone and drink them down. She’s a pansy-assed computer hacker who’s never killed anything bigger than a cockroach, and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn she carried them outside rather than kill them. Forcing her to kill with this new power will get the lesson across and make her afraid of how it feels to drain people.”

“I have a duck shifter in a jail cell awaiting execution, and I can bring him this afternoon. Tell Marco I’ll provide him at a bargain. Fifty K.”

“Thirty.”

“Fifty.”

I could pick up a homeless man who wasn’t above raping others in the community for free, or the Concilio would sell us someone with a death sentence hanging over their head for possibly as low as fifteen to twenty K, but it’d be days before the person arrived and was handed over to our custody. I knew without checking in with Marco, he’d want to handle this tonight, rather than having to put Kelsey into a cell for a few days.

I sighed. “Fine. Fifty. Jayce can take custody and put the prisoner into one of our cells.”
