The limo took me to within two miles of our destination and parked where it wasn’t likely to be seen until Josef let us know Martin had arrived. The point was for me to be seen getting out of the back of the limo while Martin watched from the roof.

I wore sky-high heels with one of my signature red dresses that showed off my figure, which happens to fit the current trends. I walked up the steps at the back of the building carrying nothing. Not even my phone.

“Etta, Martin. Martin, Etta,” Josef said, and he took his leave so it was only the two of us.

I heard something from far off, and then the noise of something approaching. If I hadn’t so recently had the conversation with Ryan about dodging bullets, I would’ve turned towards the noise to see what it was, but because we had, or perhaps it was because of the paintballs, I stepped to the side in what I’m sure was a blur for the tiger, and would’ve looked like I disappeared and reappeared to a human.

The bullet meant for me slammed into a chair and splintered it, and I grabbed the tiger and dragged him into the stairwell, closed the door, and then ran down the steps, assuming the tiger would follow.

I’m pretty sure a sniper just tried to take me out, I telepathed Josef and Marco at the same time, and replayed what had happened so they could see for themselves.

Josef ran upstairs in a blur, and was back just as fast, holding the chair.

“The bullet went through the chair and kept going. This gave me the direction it came from, and I got a quick glance at them, still breaking the gun down before they made their exit from the roof of the hospital, a little over a mile away, which means they’re pros, but it was a man and woman. They were clearly a team.”

He sent the visual he’d gotten of them, and my stomach dropped into my feet.

“Ryan’s parents. He was worried they’d come and try to take me out. Looks like he was right.”

“Slayers?”

“Yes.”

“And now they know you can dodge bullets.”

“Now we all know I can dodge bullets. I wasn’t aware.”

Let’s move to telepathy, he told me, and made sure I knew he’d included Martin in the conversation.

You think they may have bugged the place? I asked.

We regularly sweep for bugs, but the building isn’t shielded, so they might have a device nearby that can pick up what’s said inside. I don’t want you leaving in the same vehicle you arrived in. We’ll collect the driver and take a vehicle I keep nearby that isn’t connected to me or the coterie. I’ll telepath you when I’m near, and you and Martin can come out and get into the backseat. I’ll have your limo driver up front with me.

I’ll leave the way I came, Martin told Josef, and then he looked to me. Thank you for an exciting evening. We’ll make plans to meet again later.

I’m offering to see to your safety until this is resolved, Josef told him.

Martin walked out the door without responding, and I asked Josef, Where are you taking me?

With Martin gone, the two of us can move vampire-fast to the vehicle. We’ll talk about our destination once we’re in the car.

Josef walked to a cabinet, opened it, pulled a drawer out, lifted a blond wig, and handed it to me. I put it on and made sure the black hair around my face was all tucked in. He telepathed the route we would take to get to the car, and then we were out the door and making our way towards it, vampire-fast. We made our way to an unlit alley between buildings, and walked out of it, hand-in-hand, at normal speed. He put me into the car as if we were on a date, and drove away from TBC.

Just in case they managed to get a tracker on you or your clothes, continue speaking telepathically. We’ll stop in a moment so you can change clothes and put those in a dumpster.

I didn’t tell him this was one of my favorite dresses. I was enjoying certain parts of my new life, but that didn’t mean I put them above common sense.

You’re the security expert. If I have a few moments, I’ll telepath Marco and update him.

Hang tight.

He pulled onto a side road, drove over a railroad track, and parked beside an empty lot with a dumpster on it. Everything goes into the dumpster. If you have jewelry you need to keep, I have a box in the trunk we can put it into.

The dress cost over $3,000 and is one of my favorites. I don’t suppose the box has room for it?

He sighed. If that’s the case, my guess is the shoes cost nearly as much?

About half, but I can easily order identical replacements. The dress is one-of-a-kind from a designer I particularly like.
