“Got an update from Erik this morning,” Ryan says.

“Any leads?”

“Nothing of interest in the file on Lumina or any of its subsidiaries. Right now, we’re accessing video footage. But there’s not a ton of surveillance on the island. A handful of intersections. Parking lots. Open air markets. Courthouses, police station. Hotels.”

“Can’t imagine she’s at a hotel.”

“Agree it’s doubtful. Kairi reached her landlord, but the landlord doesn’t live on site. She’s not behind on rent.”

“Sounds like her condominium isn’t one of the parking lots with video surveillance?”

“Unfortunately, no. I’m not sure we’re going to get any leads remotely. Jack and I talked earlier. We’re going to send a team over.”

He’s wearing sunglasses, as we all are, and I can’t see his eyes. His focus appears to be on the game. But damn if I don’t feel like throwing my arms around my new boss. He doesn’t owe me shit.

“I can pay for it.” He holds a hand out to stop me from saying more. “Really. I have a side business.”

“We got this. You’re one of us. And Jack knew Sam. Like I said, Arrow is all in on this one.”

I choke back emotion. It feels damn good to know your team has your back. “Thank you.”

If he acknowledges my gratitude, I don’t pick up on it.

“We did learn that a couple of years ago someone reached out to the Sunday Times in London about a subsidiary of Lumina. Claimed to have an exposé worthy of coverage.”

“What happened?” I can tell from his tone it didn’t end well.

“Person disappeared without a trace. The Sunday Times correspondent reported it to the police, and somehow or another it landed with Interpol.”

“No follow-up?”

“If there was any done, it’s not in Interpol’s file. But…”

I get where he’s going. “If Sloane tried to play whistleblower–”

“Right.” My gaze falls on Sage. Shit. Sloane is her last living family member. She might have some cousins, but…if we don’t find Sloane, it’ll hit her hard.

Trevor claps me on the back. “She thinking about making her move here permanent?” He’s looking at Sage.

“She’s been here two days.” She’s laughing at something Stella said. Alex, Ryan’s wife, is scratching Millie’s head. Sure, Sage fits in, but she’d fit in anywhere. “She digs Asheville. And from what I hear, it’s a shit ton more affordable than the West Coast.”

These guys pay me well. But even with a higher salary, it’s a challenge to live here. Everyone and their mother wants to live under the California sun, and that drives prices through the stratosphere.

“Well, when the two of you cross that bridge, come talk to us before you make any decisions.”

“I think you’re misunderstanding the situation.”

Ryan chuckles and heads back to his wife. I stare at his retreating back because I think I missed the joke.

“I like her,” Trevor says.

“Sage?”

“Yeah. Of course.” He shrugs like something is obvious.

“I like her, too. And?”

“I can tell you do.”
