My visibility is shit.

One engine revs. He’s retreating.

Or picking a different path.

I grab my phone. Tap fast.

Under fire

Midway down

Unarmed

W Sage

2 moto bikes

My gaze roves over Sage. She’s crouched where I placed her. One foot above the ground. Quivering.

“Shh. It’s okay.”

“Should I go–”

“No.” I scan the trail. This is a popular trail. These men have balls. We’re almost at the bend where there’d be more hikers. How’d they know we were here?

Sage grips my leg. Her hand trembles.

“Are you okay?” I don’t see blood.

“I’m fine.” Fear coats her words, but she’s strong. She’ll be okay.

Millie’s at my side. She yelped. With an eye on the pass through the brush, I run my fingers through her fur. She flinches. Blood soaks my fingers.

“They got Millie.”

If she’s too injured to make it down, I can carry her around my shoulders. I visualize the maneuver. Fuck. It’d put us at a disadvantage. I wouldn’t be as quick to respond.

They have motorbikes. One of them could grab Sage and drive off. We can’t just hide, waiting.

“Stay here.”

I backtrack, limb in hand, and wait behind a tree. The first bike comes around the bend at a cautious speed. As he nears, I lunge.

The thick stick catches him on the collarbone, and he flips back, bike and all. In a flash, I dig my knife into the wheel. I scan the ground but don’t see his weapon. The bike’s on top of him. He moans and squirms.

The other bike approaches, engine revving, gun raised. The ground is too uneven to steer a motorbike one-handed and shoot a gun, but still, I won’t hang out here. Sage is on her own. I take off back to Sage, ducking as a bullet whizzes by.

I pause, taking cover behind a tree. He’s stopped. Checking on his buddy.

I take off.

I’ll secure Sage. Find a place to hide so I can tackle them should they trail us. Commandeer a gun and take them out.

I find Sage where I left her, shielded by bushes, cuddling the dog.

“You okay?”
