“Why not bring him here?”

He lets out a sigh and leans on the counter. The muscles in his forearms flex with his weight. “If someone’s watching him, they may slip up. Could give us some leads. Our guys out there are doing surveillance, just in case.”

“Because right now we don’t have any leads, do we?”

“Our men in the Caymans are coming up empty. But, sometimes in a case like this, it can take some time. Our tech team is going over everything they can get on Sloane.” He swings the fridge door open. “What do you like in an omelet?”

“I’m really not very hungry.” I rub my stomach. Reality is settling in and… I’m not a big breakfast eater, anyway. I usually get my walk in before I eat. “Could I… Is it safe for me to go for a walk?”

“On the beach?”

“Yeah.” Through the window, there’s a lifeguard stand, and the lifeguard putters by along the beach on an ATV four-wheeler. The scene outside feels about as safe as conceivable.

Knox snaps the egg carton closed. “I’ll eat a protein bar. Let me get my shoes on and we’ll go.”

“You don’t have to go.”

“Do I look like someone who wants to spend the day cooped up inside? A walk sounds nice.”

“But you’ve already exercised.”

“I have.” A grin plays across his features.

“This won’t count as exercise for you.” Of course, it won’t. He’s like Sam. It’s not exercise until your clothes are drenched.

“It counts as something I want to do.” The look he gives me sets a thousand butterflies free.

“Did you tell Jimmy about last night?”

“Why?” Unease sets in, like I’ve been caught doing something I’m not supposed to do.

“Just curious. If you told him about me, it’s one thing, if not?—”

“I told him.” I catch a trace of a smile before he turns to head outside. He holds the door for me and I step through into the California sun.

“Is there a speed you need to go on this walk of yours?”

“No, not necessarily.”

“How’re you feeling?”

At this, I give him the side-eye.

“Like, are you sore?”

Oh, that. “I thought you were asking me if I felt like I could make it down the beach. You saw me hike yesterday.”

“I’m not questioning your health, Sagie Bean.”

My face breaks into an ear-splitting grin. “I haven’t heard anyone use that name since…”

“Not since Sam,” Knox finishes for me.

“Right.”

“But, to get back to it…you’re not sore?”

“No, not really.”
