“No.” He lifts my hand and rubs the pad of this thumb over my nail.

“Is it just me, or does it feel like we’re not making any progress?”

“These things take time. A missing person. Last heard from two weeks ago in another country. It’s gonna take some time.”

“I feel like I should get on a plane and go search for her myself.”

“Definitely not,” he says, pulling me against him. “There’s no way I’m letting you put yourself at risk. The best thing we can do is to stay low.” A smirk plays across his face. Yeah, we’ve been lying low pretty well. “We’ve got men on the ground. They’re doing the real work.”

“That’s the stuff you usually do, right?”

“Yep.”

I remember how hard Sam worked to make special forces. The elite of the elite. The hell he went through to qualify. All the sacrifices once he made it. A labor of love. “Was it a hard adjustment? Leaving the military?”

He scratches the back of his head and grimaces. “I think I’m still adjusting. It’s different. A different way of life. Still trying to figure out where I fit in. What my day-to-day routine is.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, in the military, it’s structured. You get used to that. Trevor has most of us on a structured workout regimen, but you know, in between assignments, it can feel a little… Arrow pays us well. The idea is we’re on staff as resources when needed. Max will likely transition to specializing in intelligence in a tech capacity. It’s kind of his thing. Can’t say I share the same love.”

“That’s where the dogs come in? You’re thinking you might train dogs for Arrow to use?”

He lifts his shoulders and stretches the fingers of one hand wide. There’s a band of pale skin around his right wrist where he typically wears a watch. “It’s a thought. Although it’s doubtful Arrow’s going to need trained dogs. If they ever need them, we have law enforcement partners who could provide them. Security is a big part of what Arrow does. It’s possible I’ll get assigned to someone’s protective detail and then…you know, my days will be regular.”

“I get that.” When Sam returns, I bet he’d love to work for a place like Arrow. “So, it’s conceivable you’d need to move again?”

“For sure. It’s one of the reasons I’m in temporary housing. Owned by Arrow. What about you?”

“Me?”

“What’s a day in the life like for one Sage Emory Watson?”

“You remember my middle name?”

“Well…” He looks sheepish as his right shoulder rises. “I looked it up.”

“Where?”

“It’s on our portal. All the basic background information. It’s just…standard.”

“They did research on me?”

“Of course. Part of taking the case. Also part of figuring out what’s going on.”

“They’re spending a ton of money on me, aren’t they?”

“They are…but that’s one of the things I like about these guys. They are much more into doing the right thing than making money.”

“That’s got to be refreshing.”

“It is. When you pick this line of work, it’s important to believe you’re on the good side.”

For someone like Knox, I’d expect basic goodness and integrity to be critical. He links his fingers with mine and tugs me up, holding me against his side.

I look up questioningly, and he brushes his lips against my temple. “Just want you closer.”

With those four words, my heart’s no longer mine. It becomes his. Although, who am I kidding? I’ve been serving my heart up to him ever since I arrived.
