CHAPTER 27

Knox

“How’re things going there?” Max’s question in my earbud has me taking stock.

I’ve got a gorgeous woman snuggled against me. Outside the narrow rectangular window there’s only blue sky and stray, puffy, white clouds. And what have I been doing all day on a weekday? Hanging out. Talking. Touching. All things considered, things are pretty fucking fantastic.

She peers up at me, and her gaze lights a wick deep inside me, building on the warmth. It’s not just sex. I like talking to her. Lying next to her. Fostering a connection.

Of course, her sister is missing, and we’re currently evading what appears to be hired guns. Perspective.

“It’s good.”

“Nothing suspicious?”

Guilt nudges at the corners of my conscience. “We’ve mostly stayed inside. This beach is vacation central. No one stands out.”

“Well, I’ve got good news. Time to pack up and go.”

His tone is all business. I nudge Sage, and she pushes off my chest. I get off the bed and peer out the window, scanning the crowded shoreline. “What’ve you got?”

“We’ve identified a probable location for Sloane Watson. We’re putting together a team now.”

“Where?”

“Cayman Brac. High-level security detail. Eyebrow raising for an island with a population of two thousand. Ownership traces to a shady shell corporation. We’re putting together a team of eight. Plan is to go in at night, undetected, and if she’s there, extract. We’re tight on resources. We need you.”

“When do we head?”

“We’ll fly out overnight. Tomorrow review and prep. If we’re feeling good, go in tomorrow night. If not, we’ll pause, go in the next night.”

“Who’s gonna stay with Sage?”

“Did you find Sloane?” Sage’s eyes widen. “Where is she? I want to come with you.”

There’s no way in hell. But she doesn’t understand. The plan will be to get in and out undetected.

“You talking to me?” Max asks.

“No, man. Sorry. Sage is here. What’s the plan?” I shoot Sage a stern look to convey I’ll update her after the call.

“Felix is going to cover for you.”

“He’s not coming with?” Felix is an experienced asset.

“He’s got a family obligation. He’ll take day shifts with Sage. Still up for discussion, but we’re leaning towards relocating her to Stella and Trevor’s condo.”

“Logic?”

“Well, your dog, for one. Stella’s already taking care of it. But the condo is secure. It’s also convenient for the team to swap off coverage. And Trevor said he and Stella can stay there overnight, so there won’t be a need to put resources against overnight security.”

Trevor and Stella are good people.

“Makes sense. Any updates on the perps?”

“No. Current theory is the goal wasn’t to kill.”

“Wasn’t to swap recipes.”
