He leads me to an SUV. “Boss says you behave. Keep it up. Hands out.”

I do as he asks. “Who is your boss?”

He doesn’t answer. He simply zip-ties my wrists and then my ankles. He lifts me into the backseat of the SUV and buckles me in. For some reason, I see that as a good sign. Why bother putting on my seatbelt if he’s going to kill me?

He gets into the front seat and we move again.

"Who are you? Where are you taking me?"

The man doesn't glance at me. Doesn't speak.

"What do you want from me?" My voice trembles despite my resolve to appear strong.

Still, no comment from the driver.

"Please, say something. Who was the last man? What Family are you with?"

His shoulders roll, the only sign that he’s not an automaton.

"What does your boss want with me?"TheBoss. The man I’d let touch me, whom I gave the most intimate part of me to. I should feel repulsed, but mostly, I feel lost. I’m nobody. Nothing. Not to anyone except maybe Kate and Lucia, but they have no power to help me.

"Are you going to kill me?"

The partition between us begins to rise, cutting off my view of him, and I suppose, his ability to hear me.

Again, I think this is the only moment I can get free. My fingers brush against the door handle as I glance to the front seat. My driver’s eyes are on the road. I pull, but the door stays latched. Of course, it does. Deep down, I knew this attempt to escape was futile. Sighing, I slump against the seat and stare out the tinted window at the passing streets.

The SUV slows, then turns down an alley and descends into an underground parking garage. The man, still silent, pulls me from the car.

“Don’t try anything.” He pulls out a knife, and my heart stops in my chest. Why has he brought me here just to kill me? He could have done it back in the alley and tossed me in the trash.

He leans over and cuts the zip-tie around my ankles. He rises up, gripping my arm hard. “Let’s go.” He drags me toward an elevator as his phone rings. “Pronto.”

I can’t hear who is on the other side. Finally, he says, "Yep. Got it." He hangs up and smirks at me as he presses the button for the penthouse.

"Who is your boss?” I ask again.

He shakes his head like he’s annoyed with me but doesn’t respond.

The elevator doors slide open, revealing a world of opulence that takes my breath away. I grew up in wealth, but my family home is filled with traditional décor. This one is modern, brighter than I’d have thought for such a dark man.

I'm led through a stunningly grand foyer and to an open room surrounded by windows. It’s like floating among the clouds.

The man guides me to a lavish bedroom, giving me a nudge to enter. “Behave.” The door shuts behind me.

“Wait… my hands…” But when I open the door, he’s gone, replaced by another man who steps forward into my space, his eyes menacing.

I swallow hard and hold my hands up. “Can you cut me free?”

“No.” He pushes me back into the room and shuts the door.

I blow out a breath and sit on the edge of the bed. At least the accommodations are nice. I’ll be in luxury in my last moments.

A few moments later, the door opens again. I stand up, ready to confront whoever is coming for me. A woman walks in dressed like she works for the family. A maid or a servant. She has more power than me, but not enough to help me.

She’s no-nonsense as she carries in some clothes and cuts my hands free. “You can get cleaned up. The shower is over there.” She nods toward a door. “Here are some clothes. They should fit close enough.”

I take the clothes. “Please. Can you tell me who your boss is? Why am I here?”
