I rise and walk around my desk to stand in front of Elena. I see terror in her eyes. Her hands are clasped together, but they’re shaking.

I pull my phone from my pocket and hold it up in front of her. "If or when Lucia Fiori Conti arrives in New York, you are to bring her to me."

“No!" Elena stares at me with a frantic expression.

I turn to my men. "You all know what you need to do. Go do it. Donovan, you stay."

He nods, but he steps back, giving me the space I need and respect I deserve.

"You brought this on yourself, cara mia." I really want to punish her for making me feel such disappointment. "I saved you from having to marry Romeo Abate. I brought you into my home, clothed and fed you." I step closer to her, practically nose to nose. "I amIl Soldato Della Morte, but I was gentle with you. And how do you repay me?"

"I… I…" She's trembling, and I like the power it gives me.

"Did you really think your sister could save you?" I ask in a tone that suggests she's naïve, because she is.

Her head shakes. "I was afraid and alone. I didn't know what to do."

"You do what I tell you to do."

She looks down. "I just wanted her advice."

I put my finger under her chin to lift her face, forcing her to look at me. "You seem to be under the misguided impression that you have any control in the situation. The only advice you need is to do what you're told and don’t fuck with me."

"I just wanted to talk to her. She's not coming. I know she can't help me."

"You're right about one thing. She can't help you. Whether she’s coming remains to be seen. If she does come, she’ll be brought to me, and whatever happens to her is going to be on you."

Her eyes flash with heat, with defiance. “She’s married to Giuseppe Conti.”

“So?” Disappointment fills me again that she doesn’t recognize my power. “He’s a million years old. Rumor is he’s on his deathbed.” I know this because in truth, I know him. Respect him. The Conti Family and I have no beef with each other. “I just fucking humiliated Don Fiori and Don Abate. Do you really expect me to be afraid of Giuseppe Conti?”

“His son?—”

“Luca. Yes. I know him well.”

The defiance in her eyes vanishes, replaced by defeat. Good.

"Please don't hurt her."

I step back and lean against my desk. "Should I hurt your friend Kate instead?"

Her head jerks to me, her expression one of surprise.

I cross my arms over my chest. "I know everything there is to know about you. I know that you were taking classes. I know about your friend who helped you." I cock my head to the side. "I find it hard to believe that your father didn’t know about what you were up to. Clearly, he wasn't keeping a very good watch of you. Well, of course, we know he didn’t because you sold yourself to me."

From across the room, Donovan arches a brow in surprise.

“I have to be honest, that part I don't understand. A hundred thousand dollars for your virginity and you do nothing with it.”

She stumbles back, sitting in a chair, covering her face with her hands as her tears come. For a moment, I have an urge to comfort her, but I push it away.

"I wanted to be out of this life. This is no way to live.”

“Poor Elena. Growing up in wealth. Protected from?—”

“You don’t understand anything,” she snaps in derision.

“I understand that you have no respect for authority.”
