Liam was unable to hide his amusement. “Your little prize got one over on you?”

I shift, hating the feeling of betrayal that resumes. “A test. She failed.”

He watches me as he sips his coffee. “Test? Why?”

I don’t know why. It was stupid. More proof that this woman should be kept far away from me. “Let’s just say, she’s not fond of her father or Romeo.”

“What does that mean?”

“She didn’t call either of them. She called her sister. I don’t think she wants to be saved.”

He laughed. “You think she’d rather be with you?”

I grin. “She seems to enjoy parts of our arrangement.”

He rolls his eyes.

“The point is, her sister may be on the way. I have someone looking out for this, but I’d like you too as well. If she enters the country, I want to know about it and I want her brought to me.”

“You do know the world doesn’t revolve around you, right?”

“Oh, I think it does. That’s not all.”

“Fucking hell.” He shakes his head.

“I want you to get eyes on Kate Emerson.”

“Who?”

“Kate Emerson.”

He thinks for a moment. “Emerson as in New York City’s police chief?”

I nod. “She’s his daughter. She’s also friends with Elena Fiori.”

“What? How? Is he dirty?”

I shake my head. “If he is, she isn’t aware of it. Elena seemed to have befriended her while taking classes. How she managed that, I don’t know. Fiori seemed to keep a loose tether on her.” So loose that she showed up in a New Jersey night club and sold her virginity for one hundred thousand dollars. Money her father took. Perhaps I should kill him for stealing her freedom from her. Yes, I understand the irony that she’s not free with me. But I paid for her.

“You know what, Niko? This is crazy, even for you.”

“Who better to keep tabs on her than the FBI? It would be safer for sure. I don’t want you to do anything except make sure she doesn’t get into trouble. Keep her away from Elena and my business.”

He blows out a breath. “I’ll see what I can find out.”

I smile and nonchalantly hand him an envelope filled with cash—payment for services rendered. For someone receiving enough money to support a family, he doesn’t seem very happy.

"If you weren't my best friend, you'd be rotting in federal prison right now because death would be too merciful." He begrudgingly stuffs the envelope into his jacket pocket and stands to leave.

“Ciao, my friend.”

He ignores me, and I laugh. What a grump. I leave a few bills on the table and head out. My men flank me as we make our way to my waiting car. I survey the area just in case. My gaze stops on a car across the street with a person looking my way holding up his phone as if he were snapping a picture. When he lowers the phone, his eyes are wide, as if he’s surprised I’ve spotted him.

“Romeo-Fucking-Abate.” I hold up my middle figure to him and laugh as he almost mows someone over as he peels away from the curb.

“Want us to go after him, Boss?” Lou asks me.

“Nah. He’ll get his soon.”
