Is she judging me? Feeling like she is, I rise from the bed and move to the window seat. “It seemed like a small price to pay for freedom.”

Her expression softens. “I suppose you’re right when you are staring at a lifetime with Romeo Abate, but God.” Her brow furrows. “So, wait… how did you end up here?”

“Niko crashed the wedding. I think he was planning on killing Dad and Tiberius, but in the end, he kidnapped me. I don’t think he knew it was me until he put me in the trunk of his car.”

“Why didn’t he kill them?” The venom in her voice tells me she wishes he had.

“You know how it is. He wants his revenge, and a big part of that is humiliation.” I think of Kate. “I shouldn’t have tried to escape. I should have just done my duty and not gone to school. It didn’t matter, but now Kate is missing.”

“Don’t say that.” Lucia sits next to me. “It’s not wrong to want to be able to live your own life. And you couldn’t have known all this would happen.”

“Couldn’t I? I know how the men in this world think. Eye for an eye. Women are possessions.” My stomach turns over, but it has nothing to do with the pregnancy. “Oh, God, do you think whoever took her touched her?”

Lucia puts her arm around me. “You can’t think about that. Let’s hope that Niko and his men can find her.”

“One of his men is in the FBI.”

“Really? Well, that’s good. He can help too.” For a moment, we sit in silence. “What are you planning about the babies?”

I sigh. “I don’t know. I was planning to tell him tonight, but now… I don’t know.”

“You’re going to have a hard time keeping it a secret unless he lets you go.”

“I know.”

She studies me. “What is the deal with you two?”

“Just like I told you. I sold my virginity to him and later, he kidnapped me. I made a deal with him to keep you and Kate safe.” I think of our walks and the room he made for me. What does it all mean? Was it just a way to placate me, or did it mean something?

There’s a knock on the door and Rosa enters. “Dinner is ready.”

“Can we eat up here?” I ask.

“You’re expected downstairs.”

“Tell Don?—”

I pat my sister’s hand to stop her from going off on Rosa. “Let’s go eat downstairs.”

She purses her lips at me.

“I need to show respect.”

“Idiotic world.” She stands, and we go downstairs together.

When we enter the dining room, Donovan is sitting at the table, cutting a steak.

“Don Leone lets his dog eat at the table?” Lucia says.

“Luce!” It’s bad enough what I did earlier in Niko’s office. Lucia doesn’t have to anger his enforcer. Then it hits me, Niko isn’t here. Donovan is. Is this my last meal?

He smirks at Lucia. “Can you eat with that mouth or just spew garbage?”

“Surely, we can eat in your room,” she says to me.

He shakes his head. “Have a seat, Ladies.”

We sit as far away from him as possible. His smug smile tells me he knows I’m afraid.
