“What’s in it for me?” He puts his plate in the sink, then leans against the counter.
“What do you want?”
“What’s the deal with your sister?”
“Lucia?”
He nods.
“Ah… she’s married to a Don in Italy.”
“Sold, right?”
I frown. “I guess you could put it like that. Why?”
He shrugs. “Just curious.”
“Can I call Niko?”
He sighs. “You know, I shouldn’t call him for something so frivolous.”
“I’m not frivolous.” I’m tired of being made to feel small.
“But I’ll make an exception this time. But if he’s pissed about it…” He doesn’t finish the sentence. He doesn’t have to. I know what can happen after making a powerful man angry.
He pulls out his phone and pokes the screen. “Hey, Boss… Yeah, all is quiet except someone here wants to talk to you.” There is quiet for a moment, and Donovan smirks. “Yeah, she’s here.”
He hands the phone to me, covering the receiver with his hand. “You must have my boss by the balls.”
I take the phone and watch as Donovan leaves the kitchen. I bring the phone to my ear. “Niko?”
“Is something wrong?” His voice is cool, distant.
“No. I just wanted to apologize for the way I acted this afternoon. I was upset and scared for Kate, but I should have acted better.”
“Fire burns,cara mia.”
I’m not sure what he means. Is it a threat?
“You need to learn to control yours.”
I sit in the chair at the table. “I know.” Admitting that kills something inside me. I don’t want to control who I am. “I’m sorry.”
“Are you and your sister planning your escape?”
I don’t know why, but his question makes me laugh. “No. I know that for now, I’m safest with you. Luce thinks so too.” I pause, realizing just how ungrateful he must think I am. “Thank you for bringing her to me. I’ve really missed her.”
The line is quiet for a moment. “Do you miss me?”
I’m surprised by his question. “Yes.” I want to ask him the same, but I don't. Niko doesn’t miss me.
“Do you miss me or my touch,cara mia?”
My cheeks heat. “Can it be both?”
“Yes.”
“Will you be coming back?”
