“He knows. We all know. She’s yours.” He’s quiet for a moment. “Is it something more than just her being Fiori’s daughter?”

The question I’ve been dreading is here. “Meet me at the restaurant. Early.”

“Will do.”

The next morning, I stride into my basement office and Donovan is already there.

“Picked up coffee and bagels.” He nods to my desk.

“Thanks. Everything is quiet at the compound?”

“Yep. The two princesses were sleeping.”

“Good. I went through reports last night looking at Fiori. He has shit for successors.”

“His girls could do it,” Donovan quips. “Luce could make any of them shit their pants.”

“What is your fascination… never mind. That’s not an option. Abate will feel entitled to it and take it from Fiori’s bastard or whoever tries to take over.”

“Unless you take it.”

I nod.

“But you’ll be fighting Tiberius on two fronts since he’s trying to encroach on you.”

“But if we have Fiori’s daughters, we can get his family on board with us, don’t you think?”

Donovan shrugs. “Depends. If they’re on our side, maybe. I’m not sure how loyal they’ll be.” He laughs. “God, if Luce were here she’d be screaming about misogyny.”

I frown. “Focus. We need a plan to go into Fiori’s area. Do we have any other allies in there besides Elena and maybe Lucia?”

“Yeah. Maybe.”

“Work on it.”

I spend the morning working and the afternoon visiting a few of my establishments in the city. One of the clubs has had a big write-up in the paper, so patronage and profits are up. Good. It’s always easier to launder through a business that is doing well on its own.

I’m heading back to meet with Donovan when my phone rings with a call from him.

“I just got word that Romeo’s circling like a shark that’s scented blood.”

“Where?”

Donovan names one of the clubs in Atlantic City.

“I’ll meet you there.”

“Already on my way.”

I poke the button to call Liam. “Any word on the girl?”

“She’s not at any of Abate’s usual holding spots. None of the warehouses.”

I think about that. Is it possible she’s just lying low? “Romeo’s sniffing around. I’m heading down to Jersey to head him off.”

"Think Romeo's looking for a sit-down?" Liam asks the question I’m wondering about.

“Maybe. If he has the girl.”
