My phone buzzes, and I glance at the screen. Liam. “Talk,” I bark into the receiver.

“We’ve got a problem. One of your cars was in an accident just outside of Queens. Witnesses said three men killed the driver and took two women.”

My heart stops in my chest. “Who was driving? Who did they take?” Why the hell was one of my cars in Queens?

“Mikey was driving. And…” Liam hesitates. “The descriptions sound like Elena and Lucia.”

The world goes black at the edges of my vision. Elena. Taken from me. Rage boils in my veins, white-hot and venomous. I will slaughter them. I will rip their hearts from their chests and crush them in my fist. They have no idea what’s coming for them.

“Tell me you know who these fucking bastards are? Fiori men? Romeo?”

“Still working on that.”

“We need to find them. I’ll burn this city down if I have to.”

“Let me see what more I can find out. I’ll be in touch.” The phone goes dead.

Elena. Lucia. They were supposed to be safe at the compound. Why had they left it? Why had Mikey taken them? Was he part of this? I shake my head. Liam said he was shot. I feel bad about that. Mikey was a good kid. I had high hopes for him.

I call the compound and demand to know what is going on.

“Elena wanted to see you.” Rosa’s voice quavers. She knows I can be lethal, even to those who work for me. I hadn’t had to be like that in some time. Once everyone realized my cousin was gone and anyone who supported him was dead, they all came around. I’m a benevolent boss when I have the loyalty and respect I deserve, so no one has tested me in years. So what the fuck went wrong?

“Why? She could have called? Why didn’t anyone check with me?”

“Elena… she… she left no room for question. She’s the mistress of the house.”

I close my eyes. My staff could see too that Elena was a part of my world. Not the greater Mafia world, but mine. With me.

“Where were they going?”

“I… I think the penthouse. I don’t know. I’m sorry?—”

“I’ve got to go.” I hang up wondering what was so important that Elena had to come to the city to tell me. Was she planning on staying? Or did she intend to take me up on my offer to set her free?

Next, I dial Donovan’s number. I don’t wait for a hello. “Elena and Lucia have been taken. Mikey is dead.”

“What the fuck? How?”

“Apparently, they were coming to the city. I don’t know the details. Liam is seeing what he can find, but I need to know, Donovan, who is behind this.”

“Romeo? It has to be after last night. I’ll see what I can learn.”

“I’m going to pay Tiberius a visit. Make him give up Romeo or Giovanni.”

"Alone? Are you out of your mind? You can’t get them back if you’re dead.”

“I’ll kill him before he kills me.” I hang up and storm out of my office. I oust my driver from the car, opting to drive myself. I don’t know where Tiberius is for sure, but I know he has a titty bar he likes to do business in.

I arrive, and the extra security outside tells me he’s here. I leave my gun in the car knowing I won’t be able to gain entry with it. Two of his goons near Tiberius’s table still try to stop me, but one loses several teeth before hitting the ground, and the other probably won’t walk right ever again.

“Enough,” Tiberius booms as other men step in to help. “Let the Boy King through.”

I sit across from him, the stench of his cigar and arrogance grating on my nerves. "Where's Elena?"

He laughs. “I’ve always liked that about you. No pretense. No small talk. Just to the point. Why is the girl so important?"

I wonder if he can tell too that Elena is more than a pawn in our game. That she means something to me. If so, she’s in greater danger.
