“Fuck. Bring her to me. At the office.”

I rush backto the office. As I step through the doorway, I see Lucia, her normally fierce demeanor replaced by agitation as Donovan hovers over her like an overprotective hawk.

“Drink this. It will soothe your nerves.”

“You’re the one on my nerves.” But she takes the drink that I suspect is from my scotch bottle.

I don’t have time to make sure she’s okay. My focus, my priority, is Elena. “What happened?”

She glances up at me. “Elena wanted to come to the city. She said she had to see you.”

I remember Rosa saying that Elena was clear on what she wanted, and the staff indulged her. I thought of my mother and what Tiberius had said about her being sweet in a way that had people enamored. That was my Elena.

"Then what happened?"

“It’s all a blur. We were in the car and… someone hit us, I think. I don’t know. All of a sudden, we were out of control. I think I was knocked out, but when I came to, three men showed up. One killed our driver, and then they took us. I tried to fight?—”

“I bet you fought like hell.” Donovan’s voice holds pride.

“They’d covered our heads, but I guess they didn’t like me yelling and hit me. When I came to, I was restrained and duct taped on my mouth. The hood was off so I could see, but Elena wasn’t there.”

“I figured this could be Giovanni wanting her back. The accident was near Queens, so I asked my informants aboutplaces Giovanni has in Queens. We found her in one of his safe houses there.”

"Good work," I acknowledge, though my mind races ahead, plotting our next move. “Was he there?”

“No. No one is there now that we’ve taken care of the goons who were guarding Luce.”

Luce? I realized it must be his nickname for her. “Arrange to have her taken to the penthouse. She’ll be safe there, but let’s double security just in case. Maybe pass a little extra to officers Dobbins and Gray to patrol.”

“Maybe I should take her,” Donovan says, glancing at Lucia. “She could still be a target.”

Donovan put his hand on Lucia’s shoulder, and I’m not sure if he’s trying to comfort her or claim her. I’ve got that feeling again like Donovan likes this woman. This is why love is bad.

“I need you with me. Your men are capable." My voice is a low growl, brooking no argument. I need him to help me get Elena back, not to babysit her sister.

He nods, but he’s not happy. Sorry, buddy, but I don’t give a fuck. He can be with Lucia later once Elena is safe.

“Luce.” He says her name as he helps her up.

“You will find Elena, right?”

I nod.

“And you’ll make those assholes pay?” Her voice quavers with fear for her sister, but also with the rage of vengeance that I also feel.

“I promise.”

I watch the door swing shut behind them and pick up my phone to call Liam.

“I’ve checked on the friend, Kate, just to make sure she hasn’t been tangled in all this again.”

"Need you here, Liam. We need to end this damn war." A part of me thinks I should have gone with my original plan and killedTiberius and Giovanni in the church. If I had, my vengeance would be complete and I wouldn’t be feeling like my world was going to end with Elena not in it.

"Give me twenty." The phone call ends, and I sit at my desk, scraping my hands over my face. I’m so fucking tired.

Donovan returns. “She’s on her way.” He leans against the door frame, arms crossed over his chest. He’s not happy with me, but he’s a good soldier. He’ll do what I ask. Besides, I imagine Lucia would rather he be with me to get his sister back.

“Liam is on his way. We need to figure out where Giovanni would have taken her. He separated them for a reason.”
