Instinct has me dropping and rolling toward the bed as another shot rings out. I drop my own gun as I lever up, grabbing her wrists and taking the gun from her.

“No!” She screams and flails. I want to pull her close, help her see that it’s me, but I have to figure out where Romeo is.

I hold her tight as she hits me. “It’s Niko,” I say as I glance around the room. I see Romeo on the floor, his dick hanging out of his pants, his face covered in blood. I think he’s dead, but just to be sure, I point the gun I just took from her and shoot him in the chest. Then put it in the back waist of my pants and give one hundred percent of my attention to her.

She’s crying, weeping and thrashing.

“It’s me,cara mia.” I cradle her cheeks in my palms. “Look at me. It’s Niko.”

It takes a moment for her eyes to clear. But then I see it. The relief. She sags against me.

"You’re here.”

“I’m here. Did he hurt you?” I’m trying to inventory her body to find wounds, but I can’t let her go enough to be thorough. I can see that her pants are undone and I fear the worst. Well, not the worst. The worst would be if she were dead. But he took her… God, I’d want to revive him just to kill him again.

“I’m okay.” Her fingers grip my shirt. “He was going to… but I kicked him and he fell. And then his gun… It was on the bed. I shot him. I killed him. I’m a murderer.”

“Oh, baby. No, you’re not. You’re a hero. You’ve saved countless women from him.”

She sniffs and looks up at me. “You think so?”

I smile. My chest has inflated. Never has so much happiness filled it. “I know so.”

“I shot at you too.”

“I know. Try not to do it again.”

“I didn’t know it was you.”

“I know.” I look around and see a knife on the floor. I pick it up and cut the ties on her wrists. “We need to go.”

Her arms come around me, holding me tightly, and I’ve never felt so full and warm and complete as I do at this moment. Even not knowing whether she’s going to stay or leave, in this moment, she’s mine because she wants me, not because I’ve taken her.

“There’s an alarm going off. We need to get you out of here.” I reach down to get my gun.

“Lucia? What about her?” Elena grips my arm.

“She’s fine. Worried about you. I can tell you all about it, but we need to get moving. Can you walk?” I really want to carry her out of here, but I need to be able to protect us.

She nods. I take her hand and lead her out of the room and up the stairs. At the top, I peer into the kitchen before entering. Then I look down the hall.

“Car’s out front.” Liam is at the door. “The alarm is next door, but we should go.”

We leave the house by the front door, moving steadily but not rushing so much as to draw attention. Liam gets into the front passenger seat as I help Elena into the back and climb in next to her.

“I see all went well.”

“I shot him,” Elena says. I take her hand because I can tell she’s going into shock as the endorphins crash.

Donovan laughs. “Fucking hell, I would have loved to have seen that.” He steps on the gas pedal, taking us away from the horror.

We pull into the garage of my building, silently taking the elevator up to the penthouse. The minute we step in, Lucia is there, pulling Elena into her embrace.

“Are you okay?” She’s crying, as is Elena.

Elena nods.

“She shot him.” Donovan grins.
