There are scraping sounds as if someone is dragging a metal chair on a concrete floor.

"Okay, okay!" Castello shouts, his voice shaky and desperate. "I'll tell you!

“Don’t jerk me around, Castello. I don’t have all day.”

“I promise, I’ll tell you. I got hired by my cousin Jimmy.”

“Jimmy got a last name?”

“Jimmy Giles, but Jimmy is just muscle. The boss is some crazy-ass dude based in Southside Chicago, but he's trying to expand into South Florida. He's a real wannabe Mafia Don."

"Name?" Jenkins demands.

"I don’t know. Jimmy just calls him ‘The Boss,’ like that’s his name. Castello stammers. "That guy sounds like a real nut job.My cousin, Jimmy, he ain’t scared of nobody . . . he ain’t scare of shit, but this guy—"

"Tell me about the hit on Liam Dexter," Jenkins continues, “Don’t waste my time on the nut job. That’s a headache for Chicago PD.”

"Jimmy didn’t give me details. He just handed me the package and told me that that was the hit. I didn’t ask any questions. I just took the job. Jimmy said that it was probably the easiest job I’ll ever get. Jimmy said it was like shooting a dead duck . . . that easy.”

“Did Jimmy say why?”

“Yeah. Jimmy said that the guy is so stupid; he is very close to the guy who wants him dead. Pinning his location will be a breeze, Jimmy said.”

“Then what happened?”

“I scouted the guy for two days.”

“The guy?”

“Dexter . . . Liam Dexter. Everything Jimmy said was true, but on the day of the kill, he came home with someone. He’d hired a bodyguard, I learned later in the news.”

“So, there was a kink in your plans. Why didn’t you abort?”

“I needed the money.”

“You killed the wrong guy. Did you get paid?”

“No, man. Jimmy screwed me over. Not only didn’t I get paid. Jimmy said that The Boss said I now owe them a lot of money because Liam has gone underground. I can pay in cash or bodies. This sucks, man.”

“Is the contract on Liam Dexter still on?”

“Yes.”

“Great. I think there might be a way I can help you. Let me run it by my boss and get back to you. Don’t go anywhere.”

“He he. You are full of jokes. Where would I go? I’m in chains.”

The recording ends, and I feel a chill run down my spine. Obviously, I've known all along that someone close to me wants me dead, but hearing it from the actual killer’s mouth was a little jarring.

“Baby, are you okay?” Tony asks. I snake my arms tight around her waist and pull her close, and she is shaking like a leaf. There’s only one answer to her question.

“Yes, baby. It would be nice to know what Jenkins has in store, but we will have to wait. I’m sorry, babe, that this is so hard on you too.”

“I wish I were in Miami. I could find out more . . . much, much more.

“I am getting married to a walking, talking, kissing bride, not a corpse. You stay where I can see you.”

“Aye, Aye, Captain. Does this mean that after all this is over, we can go home? How will you know that the killer or killers have called off the dogs?”
