Beck smiles, tenderly tucking a piece of hair behind my ear. “I overreacted. I was so scared I hurt you. And that took me off guard, because I’d never cared about anyone else on the field like that before.”

“I won’t tell your teammates.”

He chuckles.

“What about…what about next year?” I ask. “I planned to play…here.” Beat Mackenzie Howard in another championship. I know some players opt to play overseas, but I never pictured myself being one of them.

“We’ll figure it out.”

“Don’t make it sound easy,” I say. “It’ll be hard.”

“I know it’ll be hard. You don’t walk on the field knowing you’re going to win, Saylor. You earn it. Fight for it. That’s all I’m asking. For you to try.”

His phone rings before I can formulate a response.

Beck groans, then glances at the screen. “I have to take this,” he tells me apologetically.

“It’s fine,” I say.

He sighs before answering, running a palm over his face as he listens to whatever’s being said. Then replies in German.

I stand and pull on some clothes, then point toward the door and mouth I’ll be right back. Beck nods before I slip out of my room and head downstairs to grab a snack. We got some lunch on campus, but I skipped breakfast and am currently starving.

I’m spreading peanut butter on slices of apple when I hear Emma’s voice. “Hello! Anyone home?” She appears in the doorway to the kitchen a few seconds later, with Cressida right behind her.

They both stop and stare at me.

“Hey,” I say, continuing to spread peanut butter.

“Why haven’t you been answering any messages?” Cressida asks. “We were worried.”

“My phone died,” I respond. “I normally charge it overnight, and there wasn’t exactly a cord on the living room floor.”

I got thoroughly distracted after plugging it in, but I don’t mention that.

Emma glances around, then stage-whispers. “Where is he?”

I smirk. “Upstairs.”

“Upstairs? Is he…staying here?”

“Yeah. Just for tonight. He’s leaving tomorrow. Where’s Anne?”

“She has a study group thing,” Cressida answers. “Now, can you explain what the fuck Adler Beck is doing in our house?”

I glance at Emma, since she already knows part of the story. “I had a…thing with him over the summer, while I was at Scholenberg. And now I think I might be dating him.”

“What?” Cressida gasps.

“Saylor’s in lo-ve,” Emma sings. She beams at me. “I’m so happy for you, S.”

“Thanks,” I say.

“You knew about this?” Cressida asks. Looks at me. “You told Emma?”

“She barely told me anything,” Emma states. “I didn’t get any dick details at all.”

“How disappointing.” A male voice joins our conversation.
