Sam shook his head. “I just cannot believe this. I knew your mom in the biblical sense, Austa. In May, I think it was? Twenty five years ago. If you were born in February of the next year, you could be my daughter, not Bear’s kid.”

Austa shook her head. “She told me Bear got her at the end of June of that year. She always blamed him for my conception, not you. She never mentioned you at all.”

Sam shook his head. “I found her and I loved her for a week or so, but I never hurt her. When we got together it was mutual consent. No way was it rape. I didn’t have to rape a woman to get her into my bed.”

Austa reached inside her shirt and pulled out a pendant that her mom always wore. “Do you know this necklace?”

Sam sighed hard. He reached out to touch the golden disk. He rubbed it between his fingers then said, “I should, I gave it to her to remember me by.” Shaking his head he told them, “I haven’t seen that in a very long time.”

That was when Sam finally noticed her hair color. He then ripped the hat off her head as a cloud of dark raven hair fell around her face and down her back. Sam gasped and shook his head slowly, “My God, you could be your mother, at the same age. You have her blue black hair and the same eye color, a sapphire blue. I should have remembered that about her. She was downright gorgeous and one hell of a woman.”

“Yes, she was, but she never told me about you,” Austa grumbled.

Sam shrugged. “I told her right off that we would have just a few nights and she was okay with that.” He paused then added. “I saw her a few years later and I was gonna stop in but then I saw you and just figured she met someone after me and she looked at you like she loved you. I couldn’t mess with that. I just drove away and I never went back.”

“Jesus Christ Bones, this one makes six kids,” Deke grumbled.

“We haven’t established that yet, so don’t be talking out of your ass there, kid.” Sam growled. “When this is over, we’ll do the test then we can talk.” He shook his head. “Make sure we know how to reach her.” He then turned and headed away toward Hawk.

She looked at Dak then at Deke and asked, “What the hell was all that about?”

Deke sighed heavily. “You heard him laugh. I know you did.”

Nodding, Austa sighed then asked, “Coincidence?”

“Not hardly,” Deke grumbled. “If you are my sister, I do wish to know. We have a wonderful family in Troy and you would be more than welcome. So there isn’t any issue about that. You see, my dad lived a wild road life, a connoisseur of women would be the polite way of describing him. But a manwhore is the best description. Love them and leave them. He and I never met until I was twelve and he ended up taking me away from my mom. I’m thirty six years old, I have a thirty two year old sister along with a sixteen year old sister. He’s married now, so he has some little ones too. A four year old boy and a two year old little girl.”

“Wow, he has been busy,” Dak commented.

Deke shook his head. “You just have no idea what a handful he is.” Then he laughed and looked back at Austa. “But if you look like your mom I can see him getting together with her for any amount of time. No offense.”

Austa just shook her head. “But if she was with him why did she tell me it was Bear who was my dad?”

“I don’t know. Maybe she miscalculated when she got pregnant? It can happen. But this danger seems to be over now. At least I hope so. So here’s my number.” Deke handed her his card. “We can set up a time for you to come and do the tests. Then you can decide if you even want a family.” He gave her his card then walked away.

Austa looked over at Dak.

Dak just shrugged. “Could he be your dad?”

Austa shrugged. “I don’t know. My mom never spoke of him but if he was with her before Bear got her, I suppose he could be? But why did she go through all the self defense classes then? Why didn’t she just tell me?”

“She probably did believe he really was your father,” Dak suggested. “So she knew Bear would be back one day and that he would hurt her and you. She had her own reasons.”

“If Bear isn’t my father I will feel so relieved. The man was insane and all of his progeny are too.”

“Well, you’re sane.” Dak took her hand in his.

Looking up at him, she said, “You sure about that?”

He laughed. “Yeah.”

“I’ve spent a long time following a madman,” she said. “And that is sort of crazy. But I felt like I needed to stop him. And yes, I wanted revenge for my mom too. I admit that.”

“Well, young lady, if not for you, many people could have been hurt.”

They both looked up to see Leon Vincinti standing in front of them.

“You don’t know that for sure,” Austa replied.
