Leon snorted. “He truly was pazzo...insane as you said. He would never even get close enough to the Bratva in New York City to even throw a rock at them.”

Austa shrugged. “You asked me what else I heard and I heard that. Where he thought he would get the numbers to take on those people I have no idea. He had delusions of grandeur but on steroids. The man did not live in reality and his sons are the same way.”

“Indeed.” Leon shook his head. “He was that way right up to the end.” He seemed to ponder this for a moment then asked, “Anything else that might help us?”

Austa tucked a strand of hair behind her ears. The long jet black lock had fallen from her cap. “I think he was looking to join another MC to ride into New York City. They were supposed to meet here in Boston after they took your men out. He said they would meet them in three days, but since he died, I have no idea about any of that really.”

“Do you know who this other MC is?” Hawk asked.

Austa shook her head. “No I never heard that but Bear said they would wreak their own kind of havoc in the big city. For some reason, Bear knew they had a gripe against the Russians and they were coming in to get their own revenge. He never did say what that was, well not that I heard anyway.” Shrugging she added, “I think he said they went up against the Bratva before and their numbers were cut way low but they survived and came back, but he said they need the Serpent’s numbers to get their objective too.”

“But he had no intention of adding his numbers to theirs did he?” Deke wanted to know.

Austa shook her head. “He always said, there can be only one king and he was it.”

“That dirty double dealer.” Hawk swore as he shook his head. “He's willing to bring war to the streets while he stands back and when the fighting is done, he’ll step up and take over?”

Deke shook his head. “None of this is ever gonna happen, we took him out, remember?”

“He may never be able to step up but one of his kids can,” Austa reminded them all. “His sons are all hotheads like he was. Crazy dumb and determined. Slither isn’t going to let them step up and take Bear’s place. He wants that spot for himself and he’s just like Bear was and that was why they got along so well. He'll wait in the shadows until the fighting is over, then he’ll kill whoever he has to and get to the top of the heap of dead bodies. So it all could still happen? I mean there may be enough dumb greedy men out there to continue with Bear’s demented plans.”

“Never underestimate avarice and greed,” Leon stated quietly. “I have faced those selfish traits in men too many times to ignore this threat. We will be taking their plans apart soon.”

The group then continued talking about coming up with a plan to take down the Serpents.

Dak moved Austa away from the rest and sat her down at a separate table. He then studied her closely.

She glared at him. “What? Is my face dirty or something?”

Dak shook his head. “No, I was just wondering what you really look like, that’s all.”

Austa rolled her eyes. “I’m just a woman, nothing special here.”

Dak shook his head. “Why do I doubt that very much? You are heavily camouflaged. I understand though. I mean the way you have been following men who could seriously do you harm if they caught you. It seems to me that you had to have a lot of courage to have followed Bear’s trail like that. You will end up having saved many lives by the time this is done.”

Austa shook her head. “I’m not all that. My mom is the real hero here. When Bear found her, he beat her so badly that he almost killed her. She fought him to leave her alone but Bear just laughed at her. Then while she was down, he took her against her will. Weeks later, she discovered she was pregnant. Anyone would have at least considered abortion but not her.” She shook her head. “She always told me she didn’t abort me because I was an innocent. I was part of the man who raped and beat her but I was also her child and she just couldn’t kill me. She raised me to be aware of my surroundings and she took me to self defense classes from the time I was four years old. She made sure I could defend myself and after he killed her, I learned to shoot a gun and use a knife. Cuz if a man ever deserved to die, it was him. I had to learn how to track a man and watch him without being caught.” Shaking her head she admitted. “I watched him most of my life and took notes. I hated him for almost as long. I learned to be careful about how I did things and I have a packet ready to be delivered to the police in case he found me before I could get away. I refuse to become a statistic or check a box if he found me. I have a rare blood type so the police can use that against him in a court of law, if he ever got caught.”

“I can’t say that I blame you at all,” Dak said. “But you can’t do it alone. I mean his numbers are too strong.”

“I’ve hated Bear most of my life because I thought he was evil and somehow I needed to stop him. Maybe I shouldn’t have taken it all on? I’m not sure anymore.”

“You stay pissed at him.” Dak grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her a little. “You stay pissed at him for what he did to your mom. No woman ever deserves to be raped or beaten. A man is so much stronger than a woman and he used his strength against her to beat the hell out of her and then he took her without her consent. Then he came back and beat her to death. You stay mad as hell at him. He took her life and he took her away from you. He deserves your anger. It’s a righteous thing and don’t you forget about that.” He paused then said, “Your mom didn’t leave you to wander around lost. She taught you to prepare yourself to go to war against the one man threatening you and her the most. She wanted you to be able to fight back and win and that’s what you have to do. Fight back and destroy everything Bear ever cared about. The fact Bear’s already dead just means you have to shut down his empire. Leave nothing to chance or it could come back and bite you in the ass. If Bear thought you were his then his sons probably know that as well. They might be wrong but right now that’s what they think and they will go out of their way to end you before you can end them. You know that as well as we do. If they find you they will take you out.”

Austa nodded. “I can look at them and feel absolutely nothing. Can I shoot them? You bet I can. This is a case of them or me and I chose to live.

Chapter Five

Leon sat at his table and was thinking a bit. He knew he had to make a phone call and warn the powers of New York City. Maybe they could join forces and that way they could protect both their cities. He reached for his phone and made the call.

“Da, hello?” Sergi answered.

“Privet, Sergi. It is Leon Vincinti.”

“Oh, molto bello, Leon. Come stai?” How are you?

“YA v poryadke, Serzhi.” I am fine, Sergi.

Whenever these two men conversed, they honored each other by speaking in the other one’s language. It became a familiar routine with the two of them.
