Chapter Sixteen

“Did he make you cry, Mom?”Agatha said as Sera slid into the passenger seat of the blue Jeep. It was Maby’s vehicle, but the sisters just took whatever vehicle they wanted to use all the time. Cars were just a way to get places.

“No.” She looked out the passenger window at Harrison’s building as Agatha drove away, not letting Agatha see her wipe her eyes.

Yes, it had been as intense and memorable as the last time, but this time, she was in a different place in life. Last time, he hadn’t really known who she was. This time, they were sober, and she had her job. And part of her job right now was investigating him.

Agatha shook her head at her mom. Over the last few months, Agatha had settled down more and had actually put on weight, making her look healthier than she had in years. She’d always known more about Sera than the other kids did, including that Harrison was the father of the little girls.

“Not as good as you remembered?” Agatha asked as she drove through the dark streets.

“It was better,” Sera admitted. “But it was only a one-day thing.”

“For you or for him? He seemed pretty into you yesterday.” Agatha’s eyes were on the road, not looking over at Sera as she wiped her tears on her sleeve.

“We work together, Ag,” was all Sera said.

“Work together well? Or is he an ass at work?” Agatha asked.

“He can be an ass, but there’s more to it than that,” Sera admitted.

“Are you pregnant?” Agatha cracked a smile at her question.

“I hope not.” Sera sighed, happy she had insisted he wear a condom every time. Even if she was on the pill, she wasn’t taking chances. Birthing three of his babies would make it look like an addiction.

“I’m just going to say you are until you can prove to me you are not,” Agatha said as she pulled in front of the house, reminding Sera of the fact that every other time she had slept this this man, she had gotten pregnant, something that only Agatha knew beyond Sera herself.

“You cannot stop me from drinking, Ag,” Sera said as she threw open her door.

“I will too stop you,” Agatha said as she followed her into the house.

“No need, Ag. I’m not!” she called over her shoulder as she opened the door. It was always open since there was always someone at home. None of the girls had regular hours or the same schedule. Someone was almost always here, and if not, there was nothing to steal anyway.

Once the door was open, Sera heard voices in the kitchen. Even though it was 5:30 in the morning, there were already people up. Going straight in to see who was up, she saw that Harper and Lucy were already working, peeling vegetables and chopping them up.

“Morning, girls,” she said as she slid onto a stool.

“Morning. Didn’t think you’d be home this early,” Lucy said from the sink. No judgement, just a statement.

“I wanted to spend the day with my girls. I missed all day yesterday and Friday. I worked late,” she said because they might not have even realized she had been gone. They had their own lives, after all.

“How was yesterday? He was very good looking.” Harper pointed the knife she was holding at her.

“Good, it was a nice day. Is the wedding still on?” she dodged.

“Nope, it was Buzzed!” Lucy made a buzzing sound over the potato she was peeling.

“Buzz.” Sera shook her head at Buzz. She wasn’t exactly known for thinking before doing. It usually got her in over her head quickly.

“We got her home and away from him, but he’s constantly calling now. She must be one great kisser,” Harper said sarcastically.

“It’s the red hair. Guys think she’ll be freaky in bed.” Lucy shrugged at the idea.

“I don’t know why men don’t realize it’s the blondes in this family that are freaky in bed. Right, Sera?” Harper grinned at her fellow blonde.

“Mom’s freaky between the sheets?” Cliff Scott said from the doorway.

It didn’t surprise Sera that the man had spent the night in the house. What surprised her was that he continued to sleep at the house. Lucy had a boyfriend, and it wasn’t Cliff. Both always denied that anything was happening beyond Cliff crashing after a late night at work or after they had been out partying.
