Suddenly, he recalled himself as a kid, thinking the same thing. They at least had that in common. Except he hadn’t thought about his father in those days. Maybe Emma did, and he felt bad for her, though he didn’t know if he was ready to step in as a father for her. He was hoping to be a friend, though.

“Do you talk about sex a lot?” He wanted to know, and she wouldn’t lie to him.

“Yes, it’s a big topic at the house. The big girls are very active, if you know what I mean.” She winked at him.

“I know what you mean by active, but who are the big girls?” he asked.

“Ask your girlfriend if you’re so close.” She had him on that one

Violet came rushing back before Sera slowly returned to the table, putting an end to his semi-unpleasant conversation with Emma. What he had learned from the kid was that anything could come from her mouth, and she was going to surprise him every time.

As her mom had said, Emma couldn’t finish the coffee, and Sera carried it back to the silver Jeep he had seen earlier. With the kids loaded up, he pulled Sera into his arms. No way was he not kissing her.

“Are we still on for tomorrow, or can we find time earlier?” he asked.

“Tomorrow. I need to spend time with the girls today, and more time next week. I know it sounds like an excuse for distance, but it’s not. Just me needing to spend time with my kids.” She sighed and pulled from his arms. He wondered if she thought that it would be a deal-breaker, that she thought he was so shallow that he didn’t want to let her have time with her kids.

“I understand. Maybe I could take you all out one night?” He tried to assure her that he wanted to know her kids also and that he knew how important they were to her and wanted to be a part of that.

“Not until after. We have to stop all of this until after,” she relaxed and whispered. He could tell she didn’t want to leave him either.

“After your investigation clears me.” He agreed as he ran this thumb over her cheek. After couldn’t come soon enough.

He could tell she wanted to argue with him, but instead, she opened the car door. “Tomorrow.”

“See you then,” he said as she shut the door. Again, he watched her back out of the parking spot, stop at the street, and drive out of the lot.

The sun was still shining, and he had learned some very interesting things about Sera. She had children, and he seemed to be very okay with that. Never had he thought he wanted to raise someone else’s kids, which was why he wouldn’t adopt with Veronica. Not that she had pushed that for more than a week, because she had felt the same way.

But these two kids were so very Sera that they naturally felt like just another part of her that he could love. His mind stopped. No, not love—like. This was all too new to call love. Way too new.
