“I want to believe you, Harrison, but you make it hard.” Sera crossed her arms in defense as his anger grew.

Harrison was on his feet, leaning down and looking at her as he whispered, “You woke up in my bed this morning, Lovely. And you have the nerve to tell me you don’t believe me?”

“This is not about us, Harrison. This is about me conducting a fair investigation. You’re letting our relationship get between that,” she whispered back.

“I just think you should believe me.”

“Because I’m sleeping with you? Is that why you slept with me?” She leaned back as if she was seeing him for who he was. He had shown her no interest until she was put in charge of this investigation. Now in a short time, they were lovers. Was he so ruthless to use her just to keep his job? Had she read him so wrong all these years?

“Of course not.” He actually looked so shocked at her accusation, she almost believed him. It almost made her forgive him.

“Well, I’m saying now that I will not see you again until this is over. Long over. And Aspen will call you for an interview.” Her words came out steadier than she felt. She was completely crushed. Right now, she wished she hadn’t left a bag at his place last night for the first time.

“Since you don’t believe me, I think that would be best,” he agreed and pushed off her desk and headed out the door.

He slammed her door behind him, just like old times. But it was true. She didn’t believe him because he had denied that he had ever had a relationship at work. But she was a coworker, and they had been having sex for a week. That answer should have changed because of her, but it hadn’t. So, had he lied the entire time? Though he didn’t remember their night together all these years later, had he had another affair with someone at work he wasn’t willing to talk about? Was it Kylie Nash? Was it more than Kylie Nash?

She had no way of knowing. She hadn’t heard from anyone that she had interviewed that he had other affairs, but they had kept it quiet, so others could have also.

She called Aspen, who was happy to conduct the interview, even if Sera hadn’t told her why she couldn’t do it anymore. And to her credit, Aspen hadn’t asked. But now she felt run down and drained. With a quick text, she had three of the girls ready to meet for drinks later in the evening. Yes, she should spend the night with her little girls, but she needed her big girls for this.
