Sera got up, looked everyone but Harrison in the eye, and walked out of the conference room with her head held high.

The room was silent for half a beat before Miles stated, “Good job, son. You beat this one.”

“Doesn’t really feel like a win,” Harrison mumbled.

“But it is. Now what to do about Sera Lovely.” Miles turned to the room.

“Nothing,” Harrison stated more confidently. “Sera is right. If Kylie Nash had the proper channels to go through, it wouldn’t have gotten this far. It would have been looked at instantly.”

“So, you were sleeping with her?” Keith asked as if he would be willing to tell all the details now that the investigation was over.

“No, but it would’ve been nice to have a file that showed no record of harassment,” Harrison said.

“But what about us being accused of that?” Keith asked the room.

“Keep your hands off women and your mouth shut, and you shouldn’t have an issue. Or just retire if you can’t. Sera is right—the next one will be bad. We lucked out this time with Kylie dropping the suit. If this had gone to trial, it would have brought a lot of bad publicity to Rodgers and Associates.” Harrison wondered if his defense of Sera would be enough.

He knew she was right. No matter what Sera had found, he would have lost. In he-said-she-said cases, the victims won every time. Sera could have walked into this meeting and said anything; her investigation meant nothing. If the lawsuit had gone to court, he would’ve been done.

“What choice do we have?” Miles asked the room.

“Not a one,” Harrison answered for everyone.

Keith shot Miles a look. “I guess we let her do it. I told you not to hire her.”

“We needed women in the executive branch, Keith.”

“See what that got us?”

Harrison stopped listening as he left the room. After all he had gone through, he understood that the company had to change. And it had to change right away.

At least Sera was going to be in charge of it.
