Chapter Twenty-Seven

Harrison had been tryingfor over an hour to call Sera, but she had yet to answer. She couldn’t avoid him forever, she had to come back to work, but that was on Monday. Harrison couldn’t wait to speak to her until then. He knew where she lived now and he would battle every one of her girls if he had to just to speak with her today.

He parked behind a white Jeep and knew that most, if not all, were in the house based on the number of vehicles in the driveway and on the street. There was no way around it. If he wanted to talk to her, he had to go through them.

On the front porch, he could already hear them yelling from inside. Behind the door, he couldn’t distinguish if Sera was yelling or not, but a lot of women were. Then they all stopped, and he could hear laughing.

When his knock went unanswered, he opened the door and stepped right into the lion’s den, or lionesses’ den, as the case may be. Nobody seemed to notice his arrival as he took in the scene. The blonde, Harper, had a brunette pinned to the ground, with the help of Buzz, the redhead. But the brunette was fighting with everything in her.

“Say it, Maby! Say it!” Harper demanded. Harper, the head chef from the engagement party. Harper, who seemed so professional and straightlaced.

“Never, Harper Lee!” the brunette fought back and yelled.

“Just a number, Mabel Lucie,” the redhead said.

“I can help you, Maby. Just admit I’m the cuter twin,” said a brunette who looked exactly like the one pinned to the floor. She was in a relaxed position on the couch, with a drink in her hand.

As if Harper suddenly had superhuman strength, she threw off the blonde who hit the floor with a thud and pulled away from the redhead. But then Harper’s eyes landed on Harrison and became distracted. Her twin immediately took her to the ground again, drink still in her hand.

“Who are you?” she huffed out from her spot under her sister. All eyes turn to him.

“He’s Mom’s guy,” Emma said dismissively from her place on the corner of the couch. He hadn’t even noticed her sitting there.

“Oh, the guy from the party. Is he the same one you guys went to coffee with? Sweet,” Harper replied and sat down by Emma and hugged her.

“Sera’s getting more wine or beer or something,” the twin sitting on top of Harper said. She was thrown to the ground by Harper, and she finally spilled her drink all over her shirt, which she then looked at in annoyance.

Harper yelped from her spot on the floor. “Maby, you’re an ass!”

“Play the movie again, Em. Maby isn’t talking.”

“Mom isn’t here.” Emma looked around the room.

“Mom has company. She can watch it later,” a black-haired woman said. Violet was perched on her lap.

Emma shrugged and hit play. The cartoon princess that had been stuck mid-song on the screen resumed her singing. Apparently, the entire group was watching a movie geared toward the littlest of them.

“Timer has a half an hour on it, Luce. I could only find these boxes.” Sera walked back into the living room holding up the wine with a smile. She caught sight of Harrison, and her face fell.

“You have company.” Emma pointed to Harrison unnecessarily.

“He can leave. We have nothing to talk about.” She lowered the wine boxes.

“Those are the best conversations,” one of the twins said, though he couldn’t tell which one. They looked so alike, especially when sitting beside each other. Oddly neither had a wet shirt on anymore. When had the drenched twin changed?

“I’m not leaving until I talk to you,” Harrison said. No matter what happened, he wasn’t leaving here without having his say.

“Sounds persistent, Mom.” Buzz grinned.

“Do we have to call him dad?” one of the brunettes asked sarcastically, earning them both a scowl.

“I’ll put them in the kitchen then.” Sera waved the boxes in her arms. “We can talk in there, without these jerks listening.”

“Wait, mom,” the blonde called to her.

Sera turned back.

“Leave a box and tell us when Maby had her first experience. Buzz says she was twenty-two, and I say it hasn’t happened yet.” Harper shot her sister a look and stuck out her tongue.
