“I’m an only child,” he told her, and the disappointment on her face was enough to make him smile. “What happened with Brad?”

If she could ask invasive questions, so could he. And he hadn’t heard anything about him since the wedding fell apart. Maybe they were dating, and he just hadn’t heard.

“Who?” Her face was blank at the name.

“The groom?” he reminded her, trying not to smile at her reaction. Poor Brad. It hadn’t been that long since the engagement had been canceled. Though to Harrison, it had been a lifetime.

“I forgot about him. I think he was looking more for a serious relationship, hence the wedding. I just didn’t feel it.” She shrugged, turning back to her breakfast.

“Or did you feel it but are no longer interested?” Mabel asked with interest, the college professor.

“Ha ha. It’s not always about sex, Maby.” Buzz shoved a forkful of cinnamon roll in her mouth.

“When was it not about sex, Buzz?” Harper asked from the stove.

“Why is this suddenly about me? Sera brought a man to breakfast,” Buzz argued through the food in her mouth and pointed to him.

“God, him again!” Emma groaned from the doorway.

“Emmaline.” Sera turned to her daughter, jumped up, and gave her a hug, which the teen fought her way out of quickly.

“Aren’t you over him yet, Mom?”

Walking back over to him and taking his hand, Sera announced to the entire room, “Nope, and I think this is going to last.”

Half the woman in the room chuckled and repeated sarcastically, “Last.”

Agatha got up from the table and set her plate in the sink, turned to the room, and stated, “Welcome to the family, Harrison. It’s not always easy to be a member of it, but it’s well worth it.” Then she left the room and headed up the stairs. Not a backward glance at the entire room left staring at her, open-mouthed in shock. Instantly all eyes went from Agatha’s retreating form to Harrison to Sera and back to him.

“Holy shit!” Lucy stated more under her breath then anything.

“Girls …” Sera started.

“You’re getting married?” Emma demanded.

“I did not say that.” Sera stated.

“How else do you become part of a family, Mom?”

“Emmaline Rose Lovely.” Sera’s voice took on the stern mom cadence Harrison now knew that came directly from her mother.

“Seraphina Marlo Lovely!” Emma mocked her.

“Now they’re bringing out the big names,” Harper announced, taking a step back.

“I don’t like him, and I’m never going to like him,” Emma yelled dramatically and even stomped her foot once.

“Emma, stop.”

“I will not. You can fuck anyone you want, but you will not destroy our family. And that is all this is: you destroying our family.” Emma turned and ran, her steps loud as she fled up the stairs until he heard a door slam.

“Emmaline,” Sera sighed.

“I’ll go talk to her.” Harper threw down her spatula.

“No, Harps, I will.” Maby got off the stool.

“I will. She’s my kid,” Sera said to them all and pulled her hand away from Harrison’s as she left.
