Chapter Thirty-One

Harrison knockedon his mother’s door, knowing it was earlier than he had ever come over before by several hours. But he didn’t want to wait to share his excitement about his kids. Now that everyone knew, he wanted his mom to know too.

While Sera had been with Emma, the Lovely sisters had regaled him with stories of his daughters and Sera and their family. They were a closer bunch than Sera had ever admitted. The older ones knew so much about even the littlest one that Harrison longed to know. They also knew way too much about Sera, so much more than he thought he ever would.

Now he stood on his mom’s front step with Sera beside him, still in a bright yellow T-shirt that said “Yalling Stan” on it, which Sera had told him should say Yellow Stone, except Lucy couldn’t spell and had produced dozens of shirts with misspelled words on it that everyone wore—mostly with pride and a little bit of fun.

It was early, and he knew he should have called, but calling would have wrecked the surprise, and he knew his mom wanted this to be a surprise. Grandkids.

“Harry, what are you doing here so early? And Sera, right?” his mom said when she answered the door, still in her bathrobe.

“Hey, Mom, can we come in?” he asked as she swung the door open farther.

“You may. It’s early, though, Harrison. I haven’t even gotten dressed yet.” She waved her hand over her bathrobe.

“Go ahead and change, Mom. We can wait.”

“Hello again, Sera,” his mom said as if she had forgotten she had already greeted the woman.

“Hello, Emily. Sorry we dropped by so early. We should have waited until a decent time. Harrison wanted to talk to you right away,” Sera said.

“Mommy did tell him to wait, but Harrison wouldn’t listen,” Violet said as she pushed her way between her parents and into Emily’s house as if she had been there hundreds of times.

“And who are you?” Emily stopped her retreat into her bedroom to change to look at the little girl, still barefoot and in her pink princess pajamas.

“Violet. Who are you?” Violet asked, not even leery of the woman she had never seen before.

“I’m Harrison’s mom, Emily.”

“My sister’s name is Emmaline. I like that better than Emily. I have an Emily in my class in school, and she is mean. Are you mean?” Violet said.

Emma had choosen to remain in the car, something that Harrison couldn’t seem to bribe her out of, and Sera figured that one grandchild at a time was better than two. After Violet had charmed the woman, Sera would get Emma.

“I am not. Are you mean?”

Violet giggled and said, “No, I’m Violet.”

“Do you want a cookie?” his mom asked, which was the perfect question, based on Violet’s reaction.

Jumping up and down a little, she nearly yelled, “Yes!”

“How about a hug?” His mom was already walking back toward her.

“I guess if I get a cookie too.” Violet let his mom hug her tight. Over her little shoulder, his mom mouthed, “Yours?”

Harrison just nodded. Of course, his mom would notice the resemblance right away. His mom quickly led the little girl into the kitchen. Changing her clothes had been completely forgotten.

“How did she figure it out so fast?” Sera asked, amazed.

“Violet looks a lot like I did when I was young, and so does Emma.”

“Don’t I know it. Those two are like your clones, but girls.”

“And you didn’t even hint that they were mine,” he said to Sera. It still stung a little that she had hidden them from him, especially after he met them.

“I had my reasons.” Which he could tell she wasn’t getting into again.

“Mommy, do you want a cookie?” Violet came back towards them, carrying two in her hand, one half-eaten.
