“I didn’t know that. I guess I have never noticed. Sorry.” His eyes came back to her face after another quick trip south.

“I’m just happy the girls are where they’re supposed to be,” she said and turned to leave.

“Why don’t you take today off? Make up for the evening you didn’t get,” he said as she went out the door.

“I will do that.” She silently cheered at her good fortune, a day to figure out someone for him to marry. Maybe then he would stop looking so sexy to her.

On the way home, she called Mabel to see if she wanted to spend some time with her today. They didn’t get together as much as they used to. To her surprise, Mabel was free for the morning, and they would meet at the house.

Maybe Lucy would get the courage to tell her sister about the babies. It would be a perfect time for them to talk.

Lucy had barely got her clothes changed before Mabel was yelling up to her that she was home. Bounding down the stairs, she yelled up to Agatha to see if she wanted to join them. The little sister’s answer was silence.

Downstairs, Mabel was already on the couch with a remote in her hand. Lucy sat down on the opposite side of the couch and waited for their favorite show to start.

“How are you and Cliff? I really didn’t see you two getting along,” Lucy said as the first episode started. It was something she asked a lot since the two fell in love six months before. She was used to it now, but it was still weird that her twin was married.

“It’s going great! I found my other half. With him, I am whole. He makes me more outgoing, and I make him a little less wild. Like you used to do for me. You need to find someone like me.” Mabel curled her legs under her and stared at the TV.

“I’ll never find my Mabel,” Lucy said with a sigh.

“You always just date people like you: loud, wild, listless guys. You need a stable one to ground you,” Mabel replied.

“I think I’m off the market for a while.” Lucy saw her opening but couldn’t bring herself to tell her twin about her own twins. Today she didn’t want to talk about all the ways she had messed up her life or all the things she had to figure out in such a short amount of time, from finding Leo Montgomery a wife to figuring out her life as a mother.

“That’s when it happens, Lucy.” Mabel grinned at her and snuggled into her just like old times. “When you least expect it.”

“Not for me.” Lucy had no intention of even looking for love for a long time now—a very long time.

The twins cuddled together on the couch, watching their favorite show. Agatha had come down at one point but just rolled her eyes at the twins crying and went back to her room. After Mabel left at 2 p.m., Lucy grabbed a notebook to write all the names of possible wives for Mr. Montgomery. By the last episode, Lucy was crying and yelling at the TV that Joey picked the wrong man, which always happened. If Mabel had still been there, she would have been cheering on the happy couple.

The forgotten notebook beside her was still completely empty. There wasn’t even a line on the page yet. Lucy saw her twins’ money slip through her fingers.
