Chapter Twelve

It was almost5 a.m. when Leo rolled off the sliver bed. Lucy was lying in the middle on her back, and her arms were above her head with her elbows sticking out. So, in the spot his head was supposed to be.

Opening his eyes in the dim light, he watched her sleep. Her breathing was even, and she wasn’t making any noise. She wasn’t moving at all. He had never seen her still; she was always fidgety.

Last night he had known she was asleep when her foot had stopped twitching. When Lucy was awake, something was always moving.

Looking at her stomach, he couldn’t believe she was pregnant with twins. Her pregnancy was halfway over, and she wasn’t even really showing. Just a small baby bump that was visible when you knew to look for it.

Reaching over, he rested his hand on her solid stomach. The thin cover didn’t hide that it was hard and rounded. Not wanting to wake her, he pulled his hand away and just went back to watching her sleep.

As he watched, she rolled away from him onto her side and sat up. Without a word, she got up and walked around the bed and went into the attached bathroom.

A few minutes later, she came out, and her dark hair was brushed and put into a ponytail. She looked awake. Going to her dresser, she pulled out leggings and a sweatshirt and tossed them on the bed.

“Harper and Buzz are here already,” she said and pulled on her leggings, giving him a glimpse of the lacy blue panties her T-shirt had hidden from him.

He didn’t hear anything. “How do you know?”

Lucy pulled the orange sweatshirt over her head. “The mixer is on, and Buzz rides with her.”

“How do you know?” he asked again, sitting up. He still couldn’t hear anything going on downstairs.

“You can’t hear the mixer? You must be old, losing your hearing,” she joked with a grin.

“Thanks, but I don’t hear it. Should I come down now?” he asked, realizing he didn’t know the plan beyond last night.

She thought for a moment. “No, give it a half an hour or so and try to sneak out.”

“What if I succeed?” he asked, turning to get out of bed.

“You won’t—they’ll be watching for you. Just take a shower or something.” She shrugged.

Without another word, she walked out of the room and shut the door. Now he was starting to doubt her plan. Getting caught in a woman’s bed by her family seemed off. Sure, she was just under thirty, but he was just under forty, and it felt wrong.

Taking her advice, he took a shower. Everything in the tiny bathroom smelled like her, from the shampoo to the body wash he used. As he pulled on his jeans, he smelled just like her. It wasn’t a bad thing, but he liked it better on her than him.

As he combed his hair with her brush, he decided the best way to show her family they were in love was to kiss her the moment he saw her. It would oddly be their first kiss, and it would take place in front of them all, whoever they all were. So, no sneaking out at all for him.

After forty-five minutes, he headed down to prove to Lucy’s family that they were in love—so in love that they were going to get married in less than a week.

At the bottom of the stairs, he saw her with her ponytail, leaning against the kitchen door frame. While he was showering, she had changed into jeans and a red T-shirt, but he knew that ass anywhere.

With a grin and a skip in his step, he grabbed her and spun her to face him. Her face showed complete surprise as his lips claimed hers. He had been thinking about kissing her for months now, but the reality of it was a disappointment. Though her lips were warm and soft, they were not kissing him back, and it just felt weird. None of the attraction he had felt for her for months was there.

With force, she pushed away from him and actually wiped her face with the back of her hand. He felt incredibly confused.

“You missed, lover boy. The one you want is over there,” a dark-haired woman on a stool nearest him said and pointed at the table.

Lucy was sitting there in the same orange sweatshirt she had put on in front of him. Leo turned to the woman he kissed and then back to Lucy at the table. He just stared at them.

“I have missed this since Maby got married! When was the last time a man kissed the wrong twin the morning after?” A redhead said with a hearty laugh.

“We do not look alike, and do not tell Cliff,” Lucy’s twin said and wiped her lips again.

“Cliff loves it when you two play each other.” A blonde who was sitting next to the black-haired woman said.

“Not kissing others!” the woman argued.
