She blinks, then says, “Sorry, but I don’t know much about computers.”

“I’m also producing a folder for everyone. You can use a printer, right?”

She looks doubtful.

“It’s easy,” I say. “And you can make coffee?”

“Yeah…”

“Come and work for me for a couple of weeks as my assistant. Help me set up the presentation. Make me coffee and boss me around.”

“I can do that.”

I smile. “There you go.”

But she frowns. “Don’t you have a PA or an assistant?”

“No. Alex doesn’t like the ‘every manager has his own PA’ dynamic. He says it leads to territorialism, and he’s probably right. We have a team of assistants and secretaries we can call on, but like I said, they’re all on vacation.”

It’s not strictly true—a couple of them were due to come in and help me, but I can easily give them some more paid leave. I’m sure they won’t argue.

She hesitates. “I don’t know…”

“It’s got to be better than cleaning. Come on, just until you find something better. I’ll pay you ten grand, how’s that?”

She looks startled. “Christ, that’s about ten weeks’ work at minimum wage.”

“Oh, well, it should help then?”

“James, you can’t pay me ten thousand dollars to use a printer. Alex would have a fit.”

“I can tell you with complete surety that he wouldn’t, he’d want to help too, and anyway he’s not my boss.”

“I thought he was in charge.”

“We’re both directors, the same as Tyson and Henry. Alex is the bossiest, that’s all.”

“I find that hard to believe.”

“If you’re going to be my assistant, you won’t be able to talk to me like that. You’ll have to be a good girl.” I smirk.

“If I’m going to be your assistant, you won’t want to get sued for sexual harassment,” she points out sarcastically.

I wince. Actually, she’s right. If she works for me, I’ll have to behave myself or Alex will have my guts for garters.

Her expression softens. “Do you really mean it?”

“Of course. I told you, I want to help, and this way we both get something out of it.”

“Okay. When are you back in the office?”

“The four of us will be in on the third.”

“I’ll start then.”

“Are you sure? You don’t have to.”

“I don’t have anything else to do.”
